Hi ladies.

Have been feeling sorry for myself all week with a stinking cold. Feel exhausted and so low. It's pretty petty really I know, it's only a cold just hadn't realised how dependent I was on medicines with a cold. Now don't know what to take. Any suggestions ? Am reluctant to take any paracetamol although I know its supposed to be safe because don't want to risk anything (what with baby's lung problem / deformity), probably wouldn't hurt at all but do feel nervous about it.

Hi all. I'm a bit late in catching up with this thread but just to say I sympathise with all of you who've suffered with colds and flus. I'm 40 weeks and have had mine (passed to me by my husband from his 'sickly' office!) for 2 weeks and only now is it beginnig to dissipate after having morphed into several differnt 'kinds' of colds!. Had loads of hot water, honey lemon and raw ginger grated which seems to relieve things (sore throat etc) for a small while but not that long. Halls throat sweets have been v good and have been taking lots of them even through the night as i've woken with coughing fits and dry sore throat. I've been stressing out with the fits as i worried that it would upset baby but all seems to be ok other than the fact that she doesnt seem to want to come out yet!
One other thing, for the second time I'm getting a tongue blister. Had it when i chewed gum and mints relentlessly, and which i guess 'burned' my tongue. After 2 weeks it went away. Now it's coming back (I assume due to acid in throat sweets and lemon etc combined with low immunity). For anyone who has the same, I've started gargling with salt water and putting turmeric mixed with honey on the blister. We shall see if it helps...
All the best to you xx

Proper honey and lemon is surprisingly effective. There's a herbal tea you can get with lemon and ginger that is good too.

You can take Veno's Expectorant - made me feel tons better with my cold just before Christmas! :) Feel better soon!

My top tip is to get yourself a box or 2 of menthol balsam tissues. I found them heaven when I recently came down with dreaded cold

LittleMilla · 29/03/2011 18:17

Ah, so relieved to find this - just been out to buy some fresh lemon and planning to make a concoction with the ginger I was munching last night!

Quick qu to the panel. Supposed to be going to pilates in 45 mins. It's my magic cure for SPD and i'll be going on Sat. But i'm worried about spreading my bugs. It's not a specific pregnancy class...but still. Small and I'm worried people will give me a "ewww" look. And i'll appear selfish. But, I know it'll make me feel better.

Thoughts anyone?

My only tip for this are the olbas tissues - I flipping love them. Even use them when I don't have a cold.

x

Must be catching!! I have been so ill with sore throat and cold, poor hubby can't sleep with my snoring! Spoke to doctor and he said your immune system weakens when you are pregnant to stop it attacking the baby, leaves you susceptible to colds and bugs- boo. He said up to 8 paracetamol over 24 hrs were fine but if for over about 5 days to go and see him. (and i am the most nervious person about my pregnancy but will take a medical experts advice) I have had hot water with honey (expensive but manuka honey is excellent) and lemon juice drink soothes the throat. He also said a diluted gargle with tcp twice a day is fine or suck ice cubes for sore throats . If you get a temperature you need to bring it down as quickly as poss as really not good for the baby, so drink plenty of iced water. Careful with hot water bottles- if your body temperature is too hot it is not a good thing (one of the reasons hot tubs etc are out). Feel better soon. X

Just reviving this thread...

I'm 37+4 and have had proper man-flu since Friday. I've tried most things - olbas inhalations with boiling water; gargling with salt water; vaporub; sleeping in as upright position as I can...but nothing is working. Just bought about the only pregnancy-friendly cough remedy from Boots today - blackcurrant & glycerol linctus. It's basically like drinking sugar and doesn't seem to be doing much.

Been downing the water as much as I can to try and flush out my system, but no joy. And had the worst night sweat the other day that I actually thought my waters had broken!

Basically, I'm just a miserable sod at the moment and needed a rant! Just can't seem to shake this bugger Sad

Hope you feel better soon!

I am just coming out of the otherside, my DD decided to share her cold, cough, headache and temperature with me, I used paracetamol for the temp as I was worried it might get too high (it didn't) as for the cold I used olbas tissues which were new to me but they were great. Cough I just had to make do with.
Wish I'd seen this thread sooner now, might not have lasted 2 weeks.

lovemybabyboy · 13/04/2011 10:11

I am 12+4 weeks pregnant and also have a cold type thing, (sore throat, ear ache, banging headache, stuffy nose).
I am a nurse and was working night shifts past couple of days, last night I felt awful, checked my temp and it was 37.7 so decided to take some paracetamol, i think a high temp will cause more harm to my baby than the paracetamol will.

Thanks Poppysmum! Think I'm turning a corner now, famous last words. I was meant to be 'resting' today, but ended up running round town trying to locate a pharmacy that still had the iron syrup I was prescribed this morning. Turns out they've stopped manufacturing it for the moment, so that was fun. You'd think drs would know this kind of thing!

Nunnie - glad you're feeling on the up. I've been practically mainlining Olbas oil...

lovemybabyboy - feel better soon, hope you get some rest too

I know this is an old thread, but it helped me so much, I had to say something. This is my first pregnancy (I'm five weeks) and I've never had to deal with a cold without meds before! I felt like I was going to die yesterday, and then I stumbled upon this thread. I went out and got myself lots of garlic and ginger, made some ginger/lemon/honey tea and a paste of raw garlic, ginger, lemon and salt and had it on a bit of bread. I also used the eucalyptus on a handkerchief idea and Vic's Vapor Rub on my chest. Drank lots of water and a cup of green tea (that was DH's idea). Thank you all for these suggestions - I woke up this morning and my fever had broken, my headache was gone and I could breathe! Brew

I know this is a zombie thread but thought I'd bump it up as I have a stinker of a cold (mainly head and sinus). I have been smothering myself in vick's, drinking loads of lemon and honey and taking the odd paracetamol. I have also been doing the noddy head maneuvre now and again to clear my sinuses

borgisarah · 05/02/2015 16:54

I am 18 weeks pregnant and i am now coming to an end of my cold. It was horrible and i actually felt like death. I was looking through loads of websites, spoke to phamacists and doctors for advice of what to take.
You can have vicks vapour rub, paracetamol every 4 hours (max 8 in a day) , halls soothers, boots value hot lemon drink (contains paracetamol) and glyceein and blackcurrent linctus for coughs. You CANT use olbas oil! I have checked all this out with my doctor.
Apart from that, drink plenty of water, orange juice and get plenty of rest.
