[Insane?] Is it possible to break your waters by coughing?

This isn't even my first pregnancy - I thought the potentially crazy questions would have disspiated this time.

But - I have a really bad cough which is particularly horrific at night. Last night I was woken up loads of times, and on one such occasion wet myself in a coughing fit (charming, I know. Obviously didn't do my pelvic floor exercises properly...). But now I am paranoid that I didn't actually wet myself but ruptured my waters. Is this even physically possible? Has it ever happened in recorded history?! I am 16 weeks...

Personally I would say it was urine. Did u smell it?

wahwahwah · 16/11/2011 12:28

Sounds like a little bit of wee escaped...

ilovespinach · 16/11/2011 12:31

Think it would be wee......I had a vomiting bug over the weekend and it was definately wee that came out everytime I was sick......Must do some pelvic floor excercises!

When my water broke with ds1 there was a definate popping sensation before it happened and a lot of water.

Last night?

Are you still leaking? if not, it wasn't your waters.

Mine broke with DD days before I went into labour, and the body keeps producing them so you just keep leaking. I had to waddle around with maternity pads in my knickers, most undignified.

No, didn't smell it, I was half asleep. It had dried by the morning (I am so glamorous at the moment...)

With ds my waters broke after a coughing fit. I was 36 week and it was like Noah's flood.

I suspect its probably urine rather than your waters. Anerotic fluid has a very definete smell.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 16/11/2011 13:10

It sounds like it definitely wasn't your waters.

But I'm really tempted to try coughing a lot, now.

It is really no fun. I was up half the night, and have spent much of the day doubled over coughing (and weeing) while DD shouts "stop coughing!!" at me... And all they would give me at the pharmacist is honey and glycerin...

... but there has been no further leaking today (other than during a coughing fit) so I guess it is just wee. What a relief/how embarrassing...

Glad it was only wee....the things us preggie ladies have to deal with, now smelling your wee is another item on the list.

I was going to say, my friend's waters broke in the middle of a hysterical laughing fit..she had been trapped in a bed being induced for 3 days (crazy people kept starting and stopping her with each shift change), and demanded I visit and bring icecream - we were getting increasingly silly and then they popped. Bless her though that her DD really really didn't want to come out and she ended up having EMCS 24 hours later but we had a wail of a time for an afternoon!

If it was your waters it would be a continuous leak.
So no, I wouldn't say so at all.
