Pregnancy

Anyone got negative pregnancy tests when they were 16 weeks+?

Just curious really. I last had a period 12th June. I have been feeling sick, had heartburn, stopped losing weight (I was dietting), been quite emotional and moody. But I am still getting negative tests.

AIR, regular pregnancy tests don't work after about 12 weeks, when the placenta starts to do the job that the hormones that POAS tests measure did previously. Sounds like you need to see your GP for next step. Good luck.

Are you definitely pregnant? I assume if you think you're 16 weeks this must have been confirmed by a blood test if you were testing negative and you've had a scan, in which case why are you still testing?

FWIW I read somewhere that if you're too far along the hormones are too concentrated for the test to work, try diluting your wee with half water and see if it makes a difference.

I haven't had a blood test or scan. I haven't been to see the midwife yet cos I am still getting negative tests so I don't know if I am pregnant or not.

I would go to your doctors. Even if its not pregnancy it should be investigated.

if you cant face the doctor some pharmacies will do you a preg test.

The pharmacy test will only be the same as the sort of tests she is using at home though. Also at 16 weeks tests might give misleading results, as mentioned above.

If you haven't had a period for 16 weeks then you definitely need to see a doctor.

Just looked on my phone calendar and I totally forgot I had a really light spotting type period 27th August. So that would make me 6 weeks late tomorrow if it was a "real" period.. Would a positive have shown up by now? Did a first response yesterday and could only see a shadowy line if I held it up to the light. Did a CBD today which said not pregnant but when I opened it up there was a faint 2nd blue line on both strips. Asda own brand and Sainsbury's own brand were both negative and done last weekend.

DS was a bright fat purple line a few days before I was due.

Afraid the digitals with two lines on the inside can't be relied on to determine if you're pregnant. It explains it all here: www.peeonastick.com/hpt/digitalsecret.html

Have you been testing all of this time or only just decided to do it now? If you've been doing it the whole time and getting negatives then you're not pregnant but something is clearly up which requires medical attention. But if you've not tested before now I have to ask why on earth not?

It is not true that pregnancy tests do not work after 12 weeks. Pregnancy tests in the vast vast majority of women will show positive all the way through the pregnancy. The level of hormone increases up to 12 weeks where it reaches a peak, and then drops slightly. Most pregnancy tests show positive if the HCG levels are 25 mIU/ml. Levels at 25-40 weeks of pregnancy could be anything from 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml, so would still show positive.

Unless you are one of those (very few) women who do not show HCG in their urine, which is doubtful as you have had a positive test with your previous child, you are unlikely to be pregnant.

In that case, and combine sounds like she knows what she is talking about, it is all the more important to get seen. Hope all is fine though.

Thanks for clearing that up about the lines on a digital test. I reckon I'm just late for some other reason. It's been 6 weeks since my "mini" period, so I guess that isn't that late really is it?

but how have you not been concerned at your lack of periods? You clearly have some idea when they are due, so why hasn't it crossed your mind before? What contraception were you using? I was on the pill and running them together when I got pregnant, so no periods, but I had symptoms at 7 weeks and found out by going to the drs when I thought there was something really wrong with me. You need to see a doctor first thing on monday, either way. You really must take more care of yourself, so long without a period would concern most people.

I am on the contraceptive patch EVRA. I used to run them back to back so I wouldn't get a period but I stopped doing that in April. I had a period April, May and June, then a mini one August. Just presumed it was my periods getting back to normal so didn't think anything of it until last weekend when my OH joked that I might be pregnant cos of my ridiculous mood swings that day. But it looks like it is nothing cos I would have had a positive test at 2 weeks late wouldn't I?

I guess if your periods havent completely returned to normal you might have ovulated later?

I would keep an eye on it.

Were you not concerned that you didnt have a bleed in July? if you're on the contraceptive patch your 'periods' won't need to get back to normal. They're breakthrough bleeds not technically periods. Your periods would only get back to normal if you'd stopped using the patch completely.

It's not normal, please go and get checked out, if not for you then in case you are pregnant, still being on the patch probably wouldn't be good for the baby.

Oops I read it as being off the patch forever as wanting to get pregnant.Confused
