I suppose that theoretically you could eat so very much dark chocolate that you went over the recommended caffeine limit (the one I never knew about, myself) but in practice I'd think the only drawback would be if you stuffed yourself on so much of it you waddled about on a bit of a sugar high and then crashed. Which is highly unlikely, really.

anything in excess is a bad thing but what do you see as 'too much'? a good excuse to eat it on medical grounds is to buy grren and blacks organic choc - any dark choc variety - as this is a great source of iron (my midwife got me onto it!)

Mandymoo · 04/12/2005 20:31

my cravings are mint aeros and twixes - these should be ok right?????!!!

yeah, just tell everyone it's only because you're pregnant .

too much caffeine isn't great (esp in the first trimester), but chocolate hasn't got that much caffeine in it I don't think.

starandsnowshaker · 04/12/2005 20:33

my craving was red bull cant get much worse than that eat and enjoy

TherewasnoMOOMattheINn · 04/12/2005 20:33

well they're not going to kill you - i'd make the most of your free dental treatment though if you eat too much! as long as you eat other stuff besides, and the other stuff is balanced as far as you can stomach, then hte only side effects would be weight gain and tooth rot (nice eh!)

AwayInAMunker · 04/12/2005 20:36

Tis for me - but I have gestational diabetes

Mandymoo · 04/12/2005 20:37

When I was pregnant with DS there was something on TV about eating lots of chocolate during pregnancy resulting in a happy baby! Fantastic timing as I was eating loads of it (and still am!). DS was a very laid back baby too.

Mandymoo · 04/12/2005 20:37

I'm not really a fan of chocolate - I can take it or leave it. However, when expecting dd I went overboard. One family size bar of fruit& nut choc almost every day for months on end.

The very thought of that now makes me heave!

spidermama · 04/12/2005 20:49

For me chocolate was essential in pregnancy for keeping my iron levels up.

FrostyTheGloworm · 04/12/2005 20:53

(sorry to but in, but...where is you wonderful mincepie Christmas name spidermama????)

and I agree that chocolate is almost mandatory during pregnancy...I was like a bear with a sore head if I didn't have a bar every night (often accompanied by a lucozade )

munz · 05/12/2005 08:55

well in the NCT booklet it says.

"Chocolate contains caffeine, but there's a good excuse for giving yourself a little treat. A Finnish Study found that 6 month old babies tended to smile and laugh more if their mothers ate chocolate regularly during pregnancy!"

good enough reason for me! lol been having at least 1 mars bar everyday for about 3 months! lol (or some form of choccy bar! lol )

It also goes on to say thou u shouldn't have more than 300 mg of cafeine per day without risking low birth rates.

ie/
6 bars of choccy (50gm each) or
8 cans of cola or
4 mugs of tea or
3 mugs instant coffee (75mg each)

feastofsteven · 05/12/2005 09:05

they have (seriously) done research showing that chocolate in PG makes for happier babies!!!

here

munz · 05/12/2005 09:09

don't know baout u girls, but as it helps DS - and in the intrests of science (of course!) I feel obliged to prove their theories right! so who's off to thorntons with me then! lol.

OnZephyrstDayofXmas · 05/12/2005 09:40

I craved chocolate with dd - especially bountys and ate loads of them. I got told off by the midwife when she did my urine test as there was too much sugar showing up !!!

feastofsteven · 05/12/2005 09:48

can I ask how many bounty's a day it takes to give you too much sugar in your urine????!!!

ENIDeepMidwinter · 05/12/2005 09:49

I would think the only downside is the sugar

and the fact there is very little, if any, real chocolate in bountys and twixes so doubt that study would apply - sorry!

OnZephyrstDayofXmas · 05/12/2005 09:51

Not that many - only 1 or 2 a day for a few weeks - but then bounty are very sickly sugary!

Mandymoo · 05/12/2005 18:50

oooopss - i also have a liking for bountys!!

I lived on it while pregnant and I have a beautiful healthy bouncing baby, after morning sickness it was 1st thing I was able to eat. Chocolate might have caffine in it but also a good souce of iron!!! Go for it! Enjoy it it's not often u have the excuse to eat exactly what u want!

Nmcl40 · 29/08/2024 18:41

I’m a coffee addict and now that I’m pregnant I have cut down from 3 coffees to 1 a day. I craved a bag of maltesers so much today I forgot chocolate had caffeine in it. Is this really bad? I have only had one coffee and then maltesers. Haven’t had hardly any chocolate since I’ve been pregnant and wanted it so bad
