Did anyone use a plastic sheet on their bed in case of waters breaking?

Hi

Just wondering if anyone has used / is using a plastic sheet just in case your waters go on your bed. I know it's not common for waters to break in bed, however I'd rather be safe than sorry as we invested in a really good mattress!

For those of you that have used one, any advice on where to get one / what to use?

Yeah I'm currently sleeping on one. I think it was bought in tesco or asda but I'll double check.

No, would have been far too hot, especially in the summer, heavily pregnant and sweaty.

As it happens, my waters did break in bed, but I held me legs and got to the bathroom.

Yes I did, I got one that didn't feel plastic but like a normal bed cover. If you waters break on your mattress I hear it smells to high heaven and you have to replace the mattress.

My waters did brea in bed, unlike belgo I was asleep and was eternally grateful that I didn't have the expense of a new mattress! Can also come in handy later with children being sick/peeing in your bed etc.

Didn't you wake up Senorita? I was also asleep and dreamed that someone was stabbing me in the back. I then woke up.

I didn't have a sheet and my waters broke in bed. I woke up, felt dampness and ran to the loo!

I used bin bags (under the sheet)- thank god too since my waters broke at about 4 in the morning when I was asleep and there was loads of it!

I got disposable nappy mats - stuck a couple under my sheet.

However my waters didn't break until DS was born!!

Used maternity pads and my waters broke at 1 at night so would have been really messy otherwise! I also needed them for the journey to the labour ward as i was still leaking!

mine went in bed with my second contraction and had meconium in them= stains. I had disposable pad things (bought from boots in a pack of 10 I think) under the sheet, thank goodness as there was so much it just poured out when I moved a leg let alone getting out of bed when DH got me an old towel to hold. We still have a stain on our carpet I can't get out though luckily the mattress was unharmed :)

The disposable pads are useful for lochia too... sorry :)

Oh, I got mine from Tesco but they have them in Boots and Asda too I think.

I am considering getting something as last time my waters broke at home, not in bed but all over my brand new carpet. I was more bothered about scrubbing the carpet than getting to the hospital!!

oh, and seeing lost's comment, I used the mat things in the car as well... plus double layer of old towels plus double maternity pads. My waters didn't so much leak as pour (sorry for TMI)

I bought this 5 pack of disposable maternity mats from Boots.

Got mine in Morrisons, they were originally bedmats for children that are being potty trained. But Tesco also does maternity bed mats.

I used a cotton covered waterproof mattress protector with conti sheets (like the pampers care mats) over the top and then a normal top sheet, have a very expensive tempur mattress so was taking no chances. Out of my 4 DC only once did my "waters break" whilst in bed, however all the effort was worth saving the mattress that one time!

Oh wanted to add that I second the getting the cotton covered ones as had used a plastic one in the past and it made the bed way too hot and me very sweaty (yuk!)

I just bought one of these It's not arrived yet so I can't recommend it as such, but I REALLY don't want to wreck our new mattress!

My mw gave me a plastic sheet to put over our mattress just in case, my waters did break at about 6am in bed but continued to break over the course of the day. That was in January and it was a bit sweaty, but was a good idea and I will look to get something like the cotton covered ones people are mentioning this time as I'm due in 6 weeks. Alternatively the incontinence pads would probably suffice.

Careful girls.........mine went while I was sat in the armchair !

buy a cheapo shower curtain - that will be plenty big enough & will do the job - circa £3 in Morrisons

disposable bed mats are invaluble as are the terry covered mattress protectors. Will be helpful to protect against all sorts, from leaky boobs, to waters, to lochia, to sicky/wet babies etc etc! Am expecting dc4 so have used for all of the above!

Sparkly and all you other ladies with stain issues can I recommend turtle wax renovating upholstery cleaner. It saved my new cream bedroom carpet when my waters broke. I now use it on everything!

I borrowed some Kylies from work (hospital grade waterproof mats) I was roasting though, it was the middle of July, so I stopped using them after 2 nights we needed a new mattress anyway.
As it was I ruptured my waters after falling off a chair but didn't realise for 2 days, I just thought my pelvic floor had gone Maternity pads kept me going for 2 days until the contractions started.

This time round we have a nice memory foam mattress topper and I've discovered DD's dry night's sheets don't make me hot so I'll be using them.

I didnt and my waters did break when i was in bed, hink changing the sheets sped up my labour, i did use pampers bed mats after baby was born for the bleeding as i had heamorraged and there was much blood!

Thanks for all your replies everyone, I'll have a look tomorrow at sourcing one of these! Seems that more waters break in bed than I thought. I'll definitely be getting something, I'm 36 weeks now so figure I should get prepared and start using soon just in case!
