The Constipation Advice Thread!

Hi everyone,

I hope you find this helpful but, during this pregnancy the constipation has kicked in severely - so for anyone that is starting to suffer too I thought I would create (what I hope is a funny but helpful/useful) constipation advice thread! Blush

(I'm not joking when I say that when it started it felt like I was having to pass a grapefruit every 4-5 days, and after a month it was more like having to pass a watermelon! - and even worse was on more than one occasion it happened on the work loos! So embarrassing when people keep using the cubicle next to yours and you can't go!)

Okay - So we all know of things that help you to avoid getting it again in the future (prunes, fybogel etc.) - but what can you do when you actually need the toilet.... but can't?

Some things that might help:

  • Try raising your feet up when you are on the toilet (using a box or something similar). Its supposed to straighten your bowel and make it easier to go
  • Never try to go to the loo when you are short of time - make sure you have at least 20 minutes (sitting there knowing that you needed to leave for work 10 minutes ago & you're still in your PJs doesn't help things to happen!)
  • Try just sitting and waiting for things to happen - no pushing or straining (you think the pushing/straining is helping, but it can actually make you tighten the muscles in the opening of your bottom as you push, when you need them to relax, and so despite all the effort you can't go)
  • Try a little bit of Blush Vaseline around the "opening"
  • Try lifting your bottom a couple of inches off the seat, so youre not actually sitting on it (supposed to work in the same way as the first one).

Hope this helps - feel free to add anything else that helps you or let us know if you are struggling too!

G1nger- surprisingly it was fine. Not half as nasty as I thought.
Hope you can 'go' asap muffins!

I will just add kiwis are not good for heartburn! Mind you everything is giving me heartburn :( ooh and on that note apparently rennies bung you up!

muffins · 02/05/2011 16:03

Today is a good day, not only did they get bin laden but more importantly I have pooped! Grin

I think I am going to be a regular visitor to this thread!

Oh and in case it helps anyone else today I had a glass of prune juice, fresh apple juice, two plums, a kiwi with skin and a 750ml bottle of water!

theonlyhb2 · 02/05/2011 16:18

i dont think i could physically eat kiwi skin!

i am loving this thread.....i do tend to go every day (with some effort!) but I find I get woken up at 2am feeling sick because of constipation, pain etc and then I finally go about 9am. But then I only go a bit and then maybe another 3/4 times throughout the day. horrible.

I guess you all get trapped wind too? Farting has become a luxury!

muffins · 02/05/2011 16:52

Theonlyhb2......every day???!!! I have poo envy Grin

Beccy2011 · 02/05/2011 16:58

oh you wouldnt if you saw what was coming out, how long it look, how it was effecting the piles, and how many preparation h wipes I go thru!

I long to fart like a normal person and then go for an easy 2 minute poo

4pudding · 02/05/2011 18:38

I got some Movicol from the docs which has been fab. Only advice is don't ignore it- I've spent far too many days in bed with most horrendously painful piles.

Jill72 · 02/05/2011 18:41

Prunes!!

prolificwillybreeder · 02/05/2011 20:06

Hurray for muffins! So pleased for you :)

Movicol I find unbearable to drink, I cannot keep it down. Though apparently it comes in milkshake flavours?

josieangel · 02/05/2011 20:56

Now writing a big shopping list for tomorrow, fingers crossed!!

Folicacid · 02/05/2011 21:01

Punnet of kiwis duly purchased today Wink

Beccy2011 · 03/05/2011 09:30

Theonlyhb2 - Good luck!!! (it's just gone 9am!) - Don't try too hard!

ha ha ha thanks Beccy but I cursed myself yesterday :( ouch my belly!

I am off to get kiwi's later (if only to make OH try one as he never has! how is this possible?!)

LauraSmurf · 03/05/2011 13:14

Hello!! I am so glad to have found you all!! Well I have been suffering for about a week now. Just feel so 'full'. Got some lactalose from chemist this morning, but my body seems to have a strange inbuilt fail safe! If i go more than 5 days I automatically get raging diahorea! Well thats today. Anyone else get this odd swinging bowel???

G1nger · 03/05/2011 14:04

I find I poo a lot better if I work from home on the first work day of the week... The stress combined with the relaxation really seems to work for me. So now I can look at my belly and say "that's definitely all bump" ;)

SuperheroYuki · 03/05/2011 14:25

Anal sex Grin not all that pleasant but it DOES work.. sorry for lowering the tone!

Spagbolagain · 03/05/2011 18:14

Watching this thread with great interest....remembering how awful it was a when PG last time. Not kicked in yet this time, but have stocked up on Fybogel in preparation.

Already a compulsive all-bran eater. Must now buy kiwis and prunes. Are all constipation foods brown? Is the effect therefore partially psychological? :o

theonlyhb2 · 03/05/2011 18:18

OH MY GOD! Glycerol suppositories.......you get them off the shelf in Boots. My pregnant friend was told by her Dr that using every few days if needed is fine, so off I went to get some.....I am not joking, literally 2 minutes after I popped it up there, I needed to go, and I went properly. I cannot believe this worked so fast. AND I got them FREE because I have a maternity exemption certificate.

what an amazing day.

wombatinwaiting · 05/05/2011 06:19

2 minutes theonlyhb2?! I think I'm off to get some now!

Will be trying the whole kiwi fruit thing too - heaps of vit c in kiwis too - more than an orange....

CBear6 · 05/05/2011 08:20

Swimming could be a reliever. Haven't been all week so was getting that "I hate everyone because they can poop and I can't" point. Took DS to the pool, pooped an hour after I got home. Don't know if it's the water taking a load off or the exercise or what but it worked. I didn't even swim, I just jumped round the water like a loon while DS paddled in circles in his ring.

CBear6 · 05/05/2011 08:21

LauraSmurf, I hear you! I seem to swing from one extreme to the other when I'm pregnant.

muffins · 05/05/2011 12:56

Good pooping news CBear6! Exercise is supposed to help isn't it, i'm always blooming knackered after spending all day at work though. I completely get the 'I hate everyone beacuse they poop and I can't thing'. DP actually asked me the other day if I'd be really annoyed if he went for poop number two of the day Grin I just scowled!

I did manage to poop yesterday which is pretty good seeing as had only been on Monday but it wasn't the most comfortable. Feel bit uncomfortable now too-hope I'm not giving myself piles! I can't eat any more fruit than I am-I give up! Plus I've been trying to drink lots of water.

KatyCustard · 06/05/2011 22:44

I'm so glad I found this thread. I am dreading going to the loo at the moment.

Just spoke to my midwife as after going to the loo for a No. 2, I looked down to see the bowl spattered in blood (bright red, no clots) and freaked out a bit. Was also concerned that am having to work very hard to go to the loo at the moment, and A) it bloody HURTS and B) I thought I may push the baby out!!! Grin
I know the blood was definately from the back not the front, and she has advised Lactulose (yuk) and to keep and eye on things, but she wasn't too concerned.

I am going to try prune juice and kiwis etc. as well as lactulose, but I am so nauseous all the time and fruit has, up until now, been one of the worst culprits!

Oh and, I'm another one that's having trouble in the work loos at the moment! Grin

Beccy2011 · 14/05/2011 12:44

Heya,

So how is everyones constipation? Hope it's better for everyone. Smile

I've just got back from a weeks camping holiday in the South of England and mine has returned - having to use the camp site toilets whilst having these problems means I haven't gone since last Friday!!!

Gulp - Fortunately at the moment I don't need to go, but I'm dreading when I do. At least it will be on my home loo! :)
