Buying baby clothes

So, with 10 weeks to go, I'm now getting round to buying things for my hospital bag and those first few days. I don't want to go mad and buy too much as I know new babies grow really fast. I'm planning to buy bargain packs of white babygros and body suits - about 8-12 of each.

What's confusing me are the sizes. Should I be buying newborn or size 0-3 months? I don't want the poor child to drown in acres of fabric, but I don't want him/her to be too constricted.

Usually I would just buy a selection and take back what I don't use, but as it's for a new baby, I'll be washing it all, so won't have that option. Help!

I personaly would buy some of each size - and then send someone out if you can to buy some more once babe arives and you know the size you need for sure.

I happily bought newborn for my 2nd, as my first baby was only just over 6 pound - and no.2 came out at one oz under 10lb!

No.3 was exactly 7lb .... be prepared :)

DD was nearly 9lb, so her newborn ones only lasted a couple of weeks. She's 2 weeks and a bit now, and in 0-3 months. They're a bit big, but makes changing her much easier, and she's got room to stretch and kick around.
So I'd suggest getting more 0-3 than newborn, but of course it depends on final baby size! Wouldn't worry too much, as it's true that everyone buys clothes as a gift!

If you can face it, I've found many things at boot fairs and in charity shops. You're right, they grow very fast. People will gift you tons of things when you have your baby, though I've always preferred things I've chosen myself.

If it were me, I'd go for half a dozen newborn things for the first month or two. Things with no feet in always last longer!

Have fun, whatever you choose. I know it's shallow, but I've always found choosing clothes to be the fun bit!!

newborn was good for my two for the first fortnight, DD was 7lb 9 and DS 8lb...errrr something or other Blush so pretty average

0-3 would have swamped them both at first, especially mothercare sizes which i found tend to come up huge

congratulations in advance Grin

Newborn are fine if you have an average size baby. I bought loads for our 2nd as 1st was in them a fair few weeks but he was too big, our twins used them for a couple of weeks (both over 8lb).

Our most recent baby went straight in to 0-3mth (she was 10lb 15oz), she's already outgrown 3-6mth clothes at 12wk old.

I am 30 weeks & have bought mostly 0-3m, with a couple of vests & pyjamas in either newborn or 1m. He was measuring big so I bought mostly 0-3! Even if they are big on him he will be snuggled up so I think that’s ok. Also in tiny sizes I have a few hats & wool cardigans for the hospital too. I have some little leggings/body’s/jumpers etc that I’m not taking to hospital, also 0-3m, and a bag of 6-9m for later. Bought/gathered a mix of stuff in various sizes from 6m-1yr really that we can rummage through later on! Congrats & enjoy the fun shopping part 😬 xo

It's useful to have a couple bits in newborn, you can always send someone to supermarket for more. I had both sides in my hospital bag, expecting not to need newborn, in the end we had to get her tiny size! The white bathrobes are handy, but I got her a patterned babygrow that she first wore. It was a special moment watching from hospital bed as my husband dressed her.

I think it is worth having a few newborn sized even if it is only for a couple of weeks as much so those first pictures look better!

I would advise buying second hand, baby really won't wear these sizes for long and you can often get bundles on FB for the cost of a large multipack of baby grows. You can also cherry pick what you want and sell on/donate the rest.

Also don't buy outfits. Not worth it, especially in newborn. Vests and baby grows are all you need for the first few months.

Mine was in newborn for a while because he lost a lot of weight - born at 7lb 7 and went down to 6 something, and didn't regain for a while. Hopefully yours will be better at eating than mine! You can always buy another pack once they arrive and you know the size, but do get some of both.

Sparklespangle · 05/11/2021 22:25

I would get one pack of newborn and a couple of 0-3. They go through those smaller sizes quickly!

DS is now 22months and in age 3-4. He was 7lb 12oz at birth. He's not chunky just tall.

If you are expecting a tall one get footless stuff it lasts longer!

This posters child will be 10 years old by now! Grin

I thought my baby would be big as I had GD but he was born 7lb 5oz and even the newborn size stuff swamped him so we had to get some tiny baby bits. He’s now 9 weeks and was weighed nearly 2 weeks ago at 10lb 5oz and is still in the newborn or up to 1 month stuff. The 0-3 month stuff is still too big on him.

sjxoxo · 06/11/2021 06:22

@iusedtoloveopalfruits1 hahaha well spotted!!!! I wonder what size he is wearing now 🤣 will teach us all to actually read the thread xo

HotMummaSummer · 06/11/2021 08:20

I would get maybe 6 newborn sleepsuits then you can always get someone to buy you a multipack from the supermarket should you need more.
My DD was 6lbs! Luckily I'd has growth scans and was told she may be small so DH had brought a 3 pack of tiny baby size! She was in newborn for the first 3 months. We had both grandparents and my sister visit when DD was 4 days old so I asked them to buy us some sleepsuits... Because who doesn't love shopping for teeny tiny baby clothes!

I'm having growth scans again this time so will wait and see what they say before stocking up
