Anyone have any experience of Stemetil/ Prochlorperazine?

I'm 19 weeks pregnant with DC2 and have been taking Prochlorperazine (Stemetil by another name) since 6 weeks for Hyperemesis.

I've been feeling much better over recent weeks, so have cut down from 3 to 2 tablets over 24 hours. I tried to do this at 12 weeks and started being sick again, so upped it back up to 3. I have been having 2 a day for the last week and have been gradually getting more gagging and sickness. Today, I feel quite rough - although nothing like the sheer hell that was the start of this pregnancy!!

My question is, has anyone else tried to cut down and found the feelings gradually coming back? Is the effect of this drug accumulative?

My Dr tells me it's safe to be on the drug at this dosage throughout pregnancy and if cutting down doesn't work, then I can go back to 3. I was just interested in other people's experiences. Thanks.

I used it from about 16 weeks after having other things that didn't work. Had hyperemesis and ended up in hospital a couple of times. I didn't try to cut down though as I was still quite sick on Stemetil (loved the injections when I was in hospital).
The doctor said that I was better off taking the tablets than dehydrating.
Congratulations and good luck!

Thanks, Ken. I think I've been quite lucky that it's worked so well for me! Pregnancy must have been very hard on you.

I'll give it another couple of days on 2 and if I'm still feeling rough, knock it up again.

Any other experiences welcome!!

I took stemetil (from 5 weeks)with DD3 and I tried reducing them several times but I just got worse each time. They really only took the edge off the sickness for me anyway and I was in and out of hospital. I also loved the injections whilst in hospital like KenDoddsDadsDog, and I loved the drip. I could have happily stayed in hospital for the whole pregnancy! I was too ill to have any sort of a life anyway.

Me too! It's the thing that scares me most about trying for another DC. But then again I had good skin, didn't have a bad back, diabetes or much baby weight Smile

The effect is cumulative, I had it for another non-pg related reason (in much larger doses i imagine) and after a few days had a harmless but very scary reaction

I'm on it and its not really working for me. I'm considering going back to the docs for something different as I can't keep beig signed off work - for a start I'll go crazy cooped up in our flat!

I'm still on three tablets a day but still being mightily ill. Perhaps it would be worse without them but that's not an experiment I want to make!

Rozee I had cyclizine. They worked better than the Stemetil but made me really tired.

I tried prochlorperazine and it did nothing for me so I gave up taking it.

Thanks all - all comments very interesting and much appreciated.

I was already aware of the drugs other (main) uses and side effects. Fortunately, the side effects are much rarer when it is prescribed at the low dose prescribed for hyperemesis.

I am still feeling sick but it is manageable so will continue!!

Realised that could be read as a bit flippant - obviously 'rarer' doesn't mean it doesn't happento you and those of you that have suffered the nasty side effects - it must have been horrible. Especially after feeling so sick anyway!! I have been fortunate.

Can anyone with experience using Prochlorperazine? My sickness in the morning is the worst and I was wondering when everyone takes their first tablet of the day, is it when you wake up or do you wait until your first round of sickness? Thanks in advance
