Hi there i would appreciate any advice regarding my beautiful daughter who is 26 months. she is quite slow with her speech (or so everyone tells me) and i was wondering if anybody had problems with conveying needing the toilet whilst potty training. i haven't started training her yet as im not sure shes ready. she often runs around with no nappy and likes to sit on the potty and the big toilet but has never done anything on either. i think she seems to think they are just glorified places to sit and if she has an accident on the floor she gets really upset eventhough i have never told her off for it. she doesnt know when she needs to go but she does know when she has done a poo and can only say a handful of words.

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi,
My DD aged 2yrs 1 month is a slow speaker too but can say wee wee and poo poo. She decided she no longer wanted to wear a nappy at 23 months and would take it off when ever my back was turned causing a severe mess!!! therefore i have had to potty train early despite not being able to talk to her about it - i just kept taking her to the potty, especially after she had had a wee on the floor and repeating over and over again, wee wee on the potty, etc, she grasped the wee pretty quickly but it has taken months for the poo to also go in the potty but the last 3 days a success... pick the poo up place in potty and say poo poo in the potty over and over again.. my next step is for her not to go in her pants, car seat, etc as she cant ask me when she needs to go,, she usually just runs to the potty and has had a bare bum for two months at home...

I would delay personally. I tried training DS at 2 and it wasn't a success, I tried again 3 months later and he was fine, I feel that was because his language developed and he understood more what I wanted him to do.

DD (24 months) is a good speaker and has an older brother to copy, she is potty trained and I think that is partly because of good speaking and understanding.

I would wait until she was nearer 30 months personally. More language and understanding hopefully equals a better chance of success
