best (cheap) bed protection

just looking for advice, are we better to use the pads under the sheet to protect the bed or get a couple of waterproof sheets?

DD suddenly decided she wanted to go to bed without nappy over Easter and we didnt have any protection so I used a large sheet of plastic and just tucked in a blanket over that. I've been using it ever since. It works for me bcos she has so many accidents and I just use a large beach towel or small blanket over the plastic so I dont worry about having a special sheet to wash and dry.

I got a waterproof sheet from mothercare which is fine, but they dont do it in standard single bed size?? It just about stretches on but has ripped a bit due to the tension. I have since seen one in b and q for a fraction of the price (about £6 I think) so maybe have a look there?

I have a terry waterproof one on bed under sheet. But then on top I have a cotton waterprrof large mat. It is fab! You can also put it on top of a wet sheet in emergencies in middle of night etc.

In saying that I have been incredibly lucky as DS decided no more nappies and has been dry ever since both day and night very shocked to say the least. But I will take the mat away with us when we go. It is very soft, nice.

Not cheep but not plasticky and therefore not sweaty/rustly..

or even 'cheap'

I found out long after I needed it but our local fabric shop sells "maternity sheeting" by the metre quite cheaply. Just a rubber looking sort of thing you put under the sheet.
