Is she ready?

Hi all,

I'm new here so hope I'm jumping in in the right place!

So my darling daughter is 21 months and seems to be showing some signs that she might be ready to potty train... she pulls her nappy up and down a lot, and recently attempted to change her own dirty nappy (in the middle of a cafe!). She also loves putting things away/in the right place (rubbish in the rubbish bin etc) so I think she will understand the concept. However, she is not interested in her potty. We've just had it sitting in the bathroom for a while and she's sat on it a couple of times but shown no more interest than that. Am I rushing things? Or should I be a bit more pro-active? Or should I try going straight to the big loo as she does love mimmicking everything we do so maybe that's the way forward???

Really appreciate any advice... and looking forward to getting to know a few of you.

I think a child is ready when they can ask (in words) or very clearly indicate non-verbally that they need a wee or a poo (i.e, go over to the potty/toilet)

21m is VERY young

If you start now you'll be clearing up endless puddles of wee

Or rinsing out pooey pants in public toilets

Others on MN are sure to tell you the opposite, though... just telling you what worked for me

Thanks! I think maybe you're right. I definitely don't fancy all those accidents! I really don't want to rush her either. Just wasn't sure if I was missing/ignoring important cues. But I'm sure we can wait for all that fun!

have to say i agree with notnow. We had a potty in the house from when DD1 was around 18 months....she would have a sit on it and sit her teddies on it etc. We didn't start potty training in earnest though until she took her own nappy off and said she wanted to do her wees and poos on the potty (at 2.4). It's so much quicker and much less messy if you wait until they decide to do it IMO.
