Potty trained for wee but will only poo in nappy

I think this is quite a common problem and would love to hear any advice going on how to deal with it. My son (3years old)has taken to using the loo for wee really well, but he refuses to poo anywhere except the nappy.
He holds poo in all day at nursery and saves it up for his night time nappy. If we're home and he needs a poo before bed time he gets a nappy and has hysterics when I try to entice him on to the potty or loo. I've tried putting the nappy in the potty but this didn't work. I've also tried bribery, promising a present, but that doesn't work either! If we're out of the house and it comes early, he doesn't tell me that he needs to go and just poos in his pants and is quite happy to put up with the discomfort!

Any help/tips please!!
Thanks!
