when to give up potty training and decide to try later?

hi all

we've been trying to potty train our little one who is 2.5 for the last three days and have made no progress. no asking for the potty, not doing anything in the potty when on it, and an increasing amount of point blank refusal to use it at all! lots of accidents though. she's showing all the signs of being ready and is really interested in the toilet. any advice on how long we should leave it before we decide it's too early to train her at this stage? should also mention that she has a seven week old brother.

Hi im having exactly the same problem, my little one is nearly 2.9 months and we have been trying to potty train her for 3 months I don't put her in pull-ups or nappies during the day she just wears knickers and pees and poops everywhere. if we are lucky we get 1 wee on the pot a day we rewards her with stickers and smarties and lots of praise but she just isn't getting it. Im hoping and praying it will click soon as I really want her to be clean - I have a 1 year old too.
You mentioned you have tried 3 days I'd say if you have the patience try a little longer just a week or so - you never know it might just click but don't feel guilty if you stop you have plenty to worry about with a new baby as well! Wishing you luck

I think if you try for a couple of weeks and you are making no progress, give up. You will know when it's right to have another go. I had a soul-destroying few weeks with my DS and I left it another six months and he was completely dry within two weeks. Was an absolute breeze and I'm so glad I gave up the first time - it really was horrible for both of us and utterly pointless. As long as they're dry before they start school there really isn't any point in stressing about getting it done at a particular point in time

DD was pretty quick and was dry in the day by just over 2 years.
DS however was harder work. We tried last summer, when he was just over 2 (march birthday), we tried again at Christmas, when he was closer to 3.
Both times we gave up as he just wasn't ready.
We then tried again with DS when he turned 3. On the day of his birthday we just did the whole 'you're a big boy now' stuff, and this time he was ready.

Keep at it for about 2 weeks, and if still no progress try again in a few months. I tried 3 times when dd was in her 2s, but when dd turned 3 in March I tried again in April and she was ready and so much easier.
