IME, when they see other boys standing up, or when they want to be like Daddy.

Whatever you do, don't force it. It's a non-issue, so let him do it in his own time.

let him sit for as long as possible. Much less mess!

Mine started at about 4. I tried to discourage it for mess reasons, but he was determined. To start with I encouraged him to go at the same time as his Daddy so that he learnt how to 'do it right' and he could clean up the drips .

My DS just decided at Easter to do stand up wees (he will be 4 end Aug). He was potty trained for about a year and just decided that one day he would stand up.

He can reach without using a step so perhaps this made a difference as he had to wait until he was tall enough!

My Dc was 2.4 when he was fully potty trained and sat on the toilet from the 2nd week - he started to stand up recently at 2.7.

Soapsy · 17/06/2010 14:46

Yes, I'd forgotten about the height thing - my DS is not tall, so couldn't reach to stand up for a long time. Plus, DH was away most of the time from potty training until then, so he had no male role model until nearly 4. But, at least by then he had some 'directional control'.

My little lad 2.2 alternates between 'stand-up wee' and sitting down - depends whether its me or DH helping him! It is a messy business as he is still a little short for the toilet but to be encouraged i guess!

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 18/06/2010 08:35

We have no male role model so we taught him ourselves - he is still short so it kind of just rests on the toilet brim he will alternate between standing up and sitting down depending on his mood.
