When do I stop night-time nappy?

My DS1 is 4.6 and still has a nappy at night. He's been toilet trained properly since 3, although still has occasional 'leak' accidents. His nappy is wet almost every morning. I've been waiting for a time when it is dry consistently for a week or so to then stop the nappies, but this hasn't happened yet. Do I wait until the nappies are dry or just go for it now?

you can't train them to be dry at night like you do in the day, as it is hormonal

agree with Ruby, it will just happen. DS toilet trained at 2.5 in three days and pulled his night nappy off a week later as it was dry everynight, he was just ready and very quick at it. My nephew on the other hand is 8 and still wet at night, every child is different and they are all normal. Especially with boys, he will do it when ready.

my ds1 was soaking every morning - but the nappy was warm, he was just weeing when he woke up. I ditched the night time nappy and in the first week he had a couple of accidents, but was dry after that. It also helped lessen accidents in the day, presumably as he was being lazy weeing in the nappy in the morning, and did it sometimes in his pants in the day.

ds2 had consistently dry nappies, so I ditched them.

My HV told me not too worry until DS was seven as this is within the normal range.

In the end ds got to 4.6 and the pull ups didn't fit anymore so we started lifting him at 10 when we went to bed and then weaned him off it. He went from being very wet to very dry really quickly. I know not everyone agrees with this method though!

DS1 is 7, and had soaked a nappy every night. The HV came to see me about DS2 the other day. I have no concerns at all about him (he's out of nappies at night at 3), but took the opportunity to ask about DS1.

She advised me to take the nappy away (obviously, it's an expensive Dry Night nappy now) so that if he wets, he actually feels it. She also told me to make sure his last drink is an hour before bedtime.

I had been very much of the "Wait till he does it of his own accord" school of thought. But I decided to act on the HV's advice.

I don't know who was more surprised the first morning when he woke in a dry bed! We've now done 5 nights and had 2 wet beds, which feels pretty good to me.

Of course, DS1 is older than your DS, but I do find myself wondering whether I should perhaps have gone for this a bit earlier.

Thanks for all you advice. We're going on holiday in a few weeks time, so after that I think I might give it a go. If it doesn't work, I can always put him back in nappies. I suspect that he is doing the wee first thing in the morning, so hopefully it's only a case of getting him to go to the toilet instead of doing it in the nappy.

LunaticFringe - from what you've said I might actually go for it, and see how you get on. There's no need for her to use the potty if she's wearing a nappy, but she might get the hang of it quite quickly if the 'forgets' when she's not wearing a nappy.
