my gp looked put out today because i could not manage to get a urine sample from my 22 month old son. she told me to sterilise his potty and get it from there when i explained he isnt potty trained she stared in disbelief. i feel so stupid should he be trained by now? i had to the hospital and get some bags in the end

It depends on the child really. DD was trained around 2 1/2 but ds started a bit earlier and was trained during the day by the age of 2. Some people also leave it closer till the age of 3 and then find training to be very quick.

DS at 2.3
DD at 19 months . Her choice not mine.

22 months is pretty young from my experience to be potty trained - thats under 2 years!

Bladder control from a physical point of view occurs usually between 18 and 24 months but the emotional maturity of actually being ready to wee in the potty is a different matter and depends on many factors. Many perfectly normal and sensible parents don't train until 3 as its more likely the child will be ready with fewer issues, though obviously some children take the lead and are ready much earlier - they are all different.

I was always told that you start potty training when both you and your child is ready.

Perhaps she stared because she didn't know what else to suggest. Either way its her issue - not yours!
