How often to put a 2.0 year old on the potty

DS1 requested big boy pants a couple of weeks ago and has been clean in the day for about 6 months so we decided to give it a go (even though DS2 is 6 weeks old, so not great timing). If we take him to the potty every half an hour he is dry but if we leave it much longer he is regularly wet. I think we are taking him too often and don't want to train his bladder to empty this frequently but don't know how often we should do it. Any advice? He says 'wee wee' in advance when we are out of the house and waits till we get to the toilet but is not saying it at home at the moment until after he is wet.

I also don't think he is emptying fully each time as he can be wet twice in 10 mins even if he's sat for a number of minutes the first time round. Not sure if this is a problem (as there is history of this in the adult family) or just part of toddler potty training.

I've always potty trained that they have to take themselves off and have done it like that since day 1 as they are not really potty trained if you are having to prompt them to do it IYSWIM. I would prompt them to go before we went out of the house somewhere but other than that not at all.

Perhaps he just isn't ready yet?
