chronic constipation and toilet training

DS is 3yo and still in nappy pants. He always sits on the toilet after nappy changes, usually has a wee morning and night, and has had the odd poo when he's gone on after a bath. He's had constipation for over 12 months (6mo on lactulose, now 6mo on movicol) and it's proving to be a problem with the toilet training. - He is happy to sit on the loo, and he doesn't withhold his poos, he just struggles to get them out and can strain up to 8 times a day, and the urge comes on suddenly, so he'll just say "poo mummy" (I'm so used to that being my name now!) and immediately have to sit down wherever he is and start straining. - His poo is often a sludge, but when we reduce the movicol a tiny amount, he goes back to struggling again.

Has anybody managed to sort out toilet training in a child with constipation and do you have any tips? - the consultant has said not to reduce his dose until he's on the toilet properly, or it can cause problems, and just go at his pace, but I'd really like to sort the daytime out before he's due at pre-school in september if possible, especially with the summer coming up and the thought of more accidents happening outdoors rather than all over our floors!

Sorry I haven't got an answer, but I hope somebody can help> I'm in a similar situation with my DD. She's 2 but suffers with constipation and as a result am worrying about toilet training which I was hoping to start soon. Let's hope someone can help.

thanks MrsT, am sure I could trawl through the archives and find something on this, but am hoping there might be others currently going through similar to have some support.

I'm going through this right now but I can't help. All I can say is that ds has today been referred to the continence team because we've tried everything and got nowhere and he starts school in September.
