My son hates his potty.

He is 2.5 and we've had the potty hanging around for a number of weeks, gently telling him that is where he should do his wee wees. He won't sit on it, he won't look at it, today when I took his nappy of and told him if he needed a wee wee to tell mummy, or do it in the potty he said "NO LIKE POTTY NO!"

So DADDY did a wee wee in the potty and that upset him even more.

Is this normal? Is it a fear of things changing? He hates having his nappy changed and general orders me to put another one on as soon as I take one off.

Why don't you bypass the potty and let him go straight on the loo? There is no point in forcing the issue, let him take the lead and make the toilet interesting and fun. Let him watch you on it and answer his questions. Get a seat for him and a stool to make it less intimidating. I've just trained a 2.5 year old out of nappies bypassing the potty (don't see the point) and it took less than a week. Good luck!

You could try getting one in a different colour. Made all the difference for my DS when I got him a red one.

Forgot to add- Yes it is normal btw, he is a toddler. They like to oppose! Just make it light hearted and fun and don't force him to do anything he doesn't want and try and not show your frustration. When he does attempt it, even if it's only to sit down for 2 seconds, heap lots of praise on him and tell him how proud you are of him.

try a trainer seat? (this one has the plastic bit and handles - don't know why they don't show it)

DS HATES the potty, but asks to sit on the padded seat. He's 2.3

HTH

I shall search for a trainer seat first thing tomorrow.

The hardest thing is everyone keeps saying "Oh don't you have him potty trained yet"? like im some kind of terrible failure

loads of boys aren't potty trained by 2.5, quite normal. ignore the judgy people

Most of my friends boys aren't TT and they're about 2.4, the ones that are are much closer to 3.

MajorMajor · 26/02/2010 21:22

We waited till ds was 3, then trained him within a day. We never used a potty but just went straight for the toilet with trainer seat, as others have already mentioned.

If your ds is already anxious about it then that will make it harder. Like TheBreastmilsOnMe says, make sure there' no pressure on him. Please IGNORE the people who say 'is he not potty trained yet?', they are talking out of their arses.

meant to say - I think that at 2.3 a lot of girls are potty trained, do a lot of your friends have little girls?

Have to say, I'm relived that most boys 6mo older than DS (so about 2.8) are just starting to be dry in the day.
