Keeping up interest in potty training

I've recently started to potty train my 2.5 yr old but she's rapidly losing interest despite lots of praise and incentives such as stickers and sweets. She's not had too many accidents and seems to be physically ready but she's getting less interested in it by the day.

We began potty training a week ago when she saw her friends wearing pants and using the potty and she wanted to do the same. Put her in pants that day and the next but she started asking for her nappy back on during the 2nd day and 3rd. Nursery put her in pull-ups on the 4th day and said she tried sitting on the potty a few times but wasn't really that interested. Now she wants nappies on and then occasionally says she wants to try using potty or toilet..with varying degrees of success. I think it may be a control issue - SHE wants to choose whether she wears pants, nappies or pull-ups! She gets upset if I tell her she's going to wear just pants and I don't want to force the issue.

I don't know whether to just give up completely and try again in a month or whether to persevere like this for another week then just go cold turkey and hide all the nappies!

Any advice/ideas greatly appreciated!

She can still try sitting on potty and toilet even while wearing nappies in between. If you think she isn't really ready to commit to the cold turkey approach you could put her back in nappies/pull-ups and institute regular potty times, on getting up from sleeps, after meals and snacks, before bath, on going to bed, etc. It doesn't matter if she does nothing, or even if she then does it in the nappy. Make no comment about a wet/soiled nappy, but do praise a used pot/loo. Make it clear she can ask to use pot/loo at any time, even while wearing a nappy. Try training again in another month. You may well notice an increase in dry nappies between times as the potty is used more often, and she may ask to go more often.

Thanks for the advice, girly whirly. It sounds like it might be worth a try.

A few people have told me however to just put the potty and pants away completely and leave it for another month or two then come at it afresh.

I'm so confused!! I don't want to make it into too much of a big deal for my little girl otherwise she'll just be put off.

Any other opinions?
