You don't need a book!

Wait for him to start telling you he needs a wee/poo

Then introduce pants

Easy

he tells me when he is just about to do one, but he can't pull down his trousers and he won't sit on the toilet.

no point even trying till hes ready makes it very stressfull for you and him. dd was 3 before she was PT

Leave the potty out for him

Does he let YOU pull trousers down for him?

yes mostly
and likes to pretend to wee in the bed and then likes all his teddies to pretend to wee in the bed

There is an Elizabeth Pantley one - herewhich I used and liked. She emphasises the importance of "readiness" and has a little quiz to do with your child.

Personally I second all those who say leave it until child wants to do it - much less stressful than you deciding, and you deffo clean less poo off carpet (none at all in our case)

Thiswas the one I used, or a version of it that was out many moons ago. It requires devoting your life to toilet training for a while but if you have a child who is ready, it works.
