Do people stay in for days on end when they begin potty training?

I'm just about to start with ds1. Should I leave it till the weekend when we can spend 3 days indoors or start now knowing we will be out for a few hours on friday?

I did the 3 day indoor thing and it nearly killed me. And the carpet.

I'm afraid I can't offer much advice as it was a disaster and I think I stuck at it too long, I should have given up and restarted.

first 2 days involve pees everywhere. i stayed in. Had potty with me the whole time and dc with no pants on so could go as soon as.

it's only a couple of days.... invite some good pals round...

I'm almost at the end of week two of training and going crazy with all the time spent at home.

I would recomend staying in though and really concentrating on it. And stick to one method! Because....

I spent the first 5 days with great results when I sat him on potty every 30-45 mins but he never asked to go himself. We went out and i just took potty.

Then i tried staying at home and leaving him pant free and this worked wonders he went whenever he needed to with no prompting and no accidents! Only problem is that when I now put clothes on him to go out he wets himself. I think I've confused him.

I think I've dragged the process out by chopping and changing and going out too much.

No way I'm stopping though, he's proven that he can do it! He just thinks pants are a nappy...hmm...

jen He'll get there A friend of mine leaves her ds in his wet pants for 5 minutes so he can feel how horrible it is to be wet..........I'm not sure how it's working though.

I am just confused as to how to go about it and what way would be best for my ds, but I'm the only one that will know that I suppose..

Someone told me earlier to just put him in pants for an hour a day and a nappy the rest of the time.

Today we bought a potty, a travel potty and he picked out some pants.

Someone else told me not to be a prisoner and go out as normal but to take a potty with us.

There is all this advise coming in and I am getting more and more unsure of what to do

I think that was my problem too!
I tried to follow lots of different advice and confused him!

I would advise (ha ha) just putting him on potty after bath every night (I did it for 15 mins in front of TV to keep him there) and eventually he will do something then make as much fuss as you can about how clever he is. As soon as he cottoned on to what he was doing he began to wee straight away if he could and stand up and exclaim 'did it'!!

Then when you do go for it put him in pants and only in a nappy at sleep time. I think chopping and changing between pants and nappy is too confusing. They don't know whether it's OK to wee or not.

But then again I haven't trained mine fully so what do I know!!

I will try leaving him in wet pants for longer, thank you.

Mine wouldn't wear the pants at all on day one.. he wanted nappy. I told him that we weren't doing nappy today.. he cried.

i didn't give in.

we trailed around together all day with potty by our side.. we later switched to a bucket.. for ease of aim purposes. Sure the first day was hard, the second not so bad, but you know he can do it and you have to keep going. Give it a week. Every 15 minutes asking him if he needs to do a wee, take him to the potty/bucket and take his trousers down and see, go mental with praise, clap and cheer, and he'll lap it all up! Poos, you have to work out when he normally does them and keep sticking him on the potty repeatedly around those times...

The first few days you'll want to stay close to home, but if you can take him out for a walk near your home or something after a couple of days, 15/20 mins, and then gradually extend it.

main thing, expect acidents and praise him anyway...

We've been up for about half an hour and he's telling me he needs a poo but everytime I tell him he needs to do poo on potty now, and guide him over he screams. His fav teddy has just had a poo on potty (I dropped some soggy weetabix in potty as I sat teddy down on it and teddy got a chocolate and a star on his reward chart plus fuss and hugs. Ds1 stopped screaming and touched the potty, but now he's left the room so better check he isn't having a dump in the hall!

I have never spent a day at home because of potty training. If you wait until they are ready there should be no need.

That said, there is no harm in starting them earlier and making it harder work, and I see the benefit of getting it done.

I just went out and about like usual Is so easy to forget that they haven't got a nappy on though...

Thanks. I'm planning to stay in over the weekend and then go out as normal next week. So far he has had a poo and 2 wee's on the floor. I managed to catch the 2nd wee in the potty so made a huge fuss and let him put a star on his reward chart.
I think if he hasn't done a wee sitting on the potty by monday, I'll put him in pull ups and take a more relaxed approach.
I thought he was ready because he started to tell me when he was going to wee and poo, then on wednesday, I decided we'd start thins weekend and thursday and friday he stopped telling me......

No, we didn't - we waited until dd wanted to use the potty. All her friends were already using theirs and she watched them for some weeks, then wanted to do it too. We put nappies on for going out and took them off at home.

We stayed in for both dcs just because it really wasn't a big deal when they had accidents. It coincided with a holiday or long weekend. Had a lot of accidents in the first 2-3 days and then just got better. DS cracked it totally in 10 days, no accidents after. DD was trickier, still has occasional accidents and is insistent she can wee standing up like dh and her brother

Just read that back and it sounded as if we stayed in for 10 days! We stayed in and around the house for 3-4 days, just doing things that needed to be done, and no long car journeys.
