a bit confused about the next step after being potty trained

My dd is 25 months old and she goes to potty for pee and poo whenever the urge hits her when she isn't wearing anything on her bottom at home. I think this is already fantastic but whenever I put nappies, normal panties or trousers on she just does it inside. How can I teach her to ask me when she wants to go peepee and poopoo so that she doesn't have to wear nappy whenever we go out and then she could be nappy free for at least the whole daytime??

My DS could also do this at 25 months. Now at 2 yrs 8 months he has only just cracked it!

Dd potty trained at 22 months and we let her be bare bummed at home for it. When we first put knickers on her she would wee in them - think she thought it was the same as having a nappy on. We put her in a skirt for a day (i.e. skirt and no knickers) which meant she had clothes on the bottom half but still had the bare bummed feeling. Next day she was fine with knickers/trousers, etc.

hmmm yes well she never has accident when she is bare bottomed. It's just when she is wearing clothes. I'll try the skirt without knickers and maybe that will help...or I'll just have to wait a bit!!

Have you tried spending a couple of days in a row with her just being at home with her pants on and expecting a few accidents in the pants? It might be that she needs a day or two of experiencing having accidents in her pants in order to grasp the concept that they are not a nappy. I would say that if she understands the need to go when she is bare bottomed then she is definitely ready to move onto pants, it's just a concept thing of understanding that pants are not a nappy which I'm sure she will work out really quickly if you grit your teeth and prepare to accept accidents for a few days (whilst taking her to the potty regularly too of course).

Nelly - thanks for that tip, it makes perfect sense!! I'm going to try this on Thursday/Friday and see what happens......

its also a good idea to get the children to understand about pulling pants up and down, as that is something they can link to going to the toliet, we find at nursery some children who wear nothing at home can become quite confused at nursery when wearing pants and trousers or skirts, e.t.c they get to the potty and toliet and just stand there not quite sure what to do, and also wet pants and trousers feel alot different then just wet knickers, i know it means more washing but in the long run it will help

thanks, will give it a go. He does struggle to pull his pants and trousers down (although managed to get his pjs and pull up off last night!). Will get nana to practice with him today.

a good idea is to use joggy bottoms, lots of elastic type trousers as they go up and down alot easier, then jeans and stuff with belts.

do you think i'd get away with putting him in pj bottoms? The joggers I've got are quite absorbent lol! Think i'll leave his pants off for a while as he seems to struggle with pants more than trousers.

yeah i can't see why not, lots of children at nursery seem to be in pj bottoms although parents do say they are trousers
