Any potty training experts around? Can anyone tell me a) how to get dd to poo on the loo and b) how to be more zen like about the whole business?

DD is just 3. She's quite good at weeing on the loo but has always been a poo refusnik.

Since she's going to pre school in September I decided to go for it and put her in knickers. It's only been 3 days but it's been a disaster. I keep asking her if she wants to go to the loo but she just says 'no' then poos in her pants! I'm trying to remain calm but am finding it sooo annoying. DS was over 3 when he did it but did it overnight almost, with none of these issues.

Do I persist? Or just have a break and come back to in a couple of weeks? Or is there some fantastic make-them-poo-on-the-loo trick I didn't know about?!

Good questions, I'm feeling very un-zen-like about it all. Be interested to hear others' advice.

We've been training for a month now and DD does the same thing, poos in her pants minutes after you've just taken her to the potty.

Tried a new tactic today which I read about on here. We went out and bought loads of cheap tat prizes and put them in a bag. She gets to put her hand in and pull out a prize if she does a poo on the potty. Well it's so far tonight as we've had our first poo on the potty in ages in return for a lucky dip prize!

Meant to say it's worked so far tonight!

Doozle, that sounds like a plan. I shall shop tomorrow for said tat bag. She is extremely partial to chocolate too, so I could try including that as well. I have promised her rewards if she does a poo on the loo but the rewards actually being there might spur her on.

DS does this too. Sorry not helpful but you are not alone! I think you have to find the trick that works for you for the time being - we have DS's first poo on the loo since starting training cos I (after trawling through past threads on here) told him it would make a good splashing noise . Seems to have worked - but not sure it will work tomorrow!

and I would ditch the nappies and resign yourself to pooey pants for a while (sigh). Get lots of cheap ones in.

You're right, cheap pants are the way forward. And I'll put the 'sploshing' idea on the list of things that might just work.

Docket, Good luck, it's worth a try Yes, have read it's good if they can see lucky dip physically being around. They need lots of reminding it about it too. Maybe we can keep posting to see how we do.

Effieperine, have you read from others how long they reckon it can take with the pooey knickers? I feel if current trick doesn't work, we might be doing this for a long time

Well, we've been suffering pooey pants for about 3 weeks . Am hoping it will gradually improve. He is mostly dry now, although we still have accidents when I don't remind him to go to the loo often enough. I'm trying to stay calm about the whole thing but admit to snapping at him last night, 'WHY can't you poo on the toilet? EVERYONE ELSE does!'

I'm with you, it's so hard not to show frustration. We've been having pretty much all poos in pants for a month now.

Since we're having same problems, maybe there's something about pooing on the potty that takes longer for them to get used to than the wees?

I find it almost impossible to avoid frustration when faced with poo-caked pants.

We shall persist, we shall succeed! If anyone has a breakthrough perhaps they could post and share?!

I think it's pretty common, kind of makes sense as it's something that happens once or twice a day (judging by DS1) rather than every hour or so - maybe they need to get used to the sensation of needing a poo?

we know when dd is going as she only goes about twice a week

but if we put her on the loo she stops trying and because I panic if she doesn't go I let her go in her pants

she'll be 3 in september and I have no idea how to solve it, if I get tough she might become really constipated or just go in her nighttime nappy

Ah the stress! Sorry to hear you're in the same boat, big chris.

By the way, do your little ones tell you if they need a wee or are you reminding them all the time?

DD will do a wee if I tell her it's time. But if I leave it up to her, she will just have an accident. I'm guessing this just takes time too.

DD is not bad with taking herself to do a wee but I do remind her as well as she does still forget quite a bit.

Like you say, these things take time and I suspect I'd cope a lot better if I just accepted that rather than wanting everything to be fixed right now this minute!

We had this problem with DD2 a couple of years ago.

We told her that the poo waiting to come out was very excited, as when it was flushed it zoomed off to poo-poo land, and played with its friends on the slides and trikes.

Another trick was to count how many poos there are and talk about their shapes. This chat still goes on, yesterday she did an aubergine, rocket, and brother and sister triangle ouch.

We are going through similar things with DD1 (aged 2.9y)although she is happy to do a poo in a potty but we do end up with a lot of poo smeared pants (the start of a poo!)

We also seem to have a current issue with 'dribblng' in her pants . I think she is starting to wee and then stopping until she gets to the loo.

She can't get on/off the toilet by herself (even with a step she is too small/slow) so I am still having to lift her on/off when she asks. But she will use the potty by herself.

How do you get all your LOs on/off the toilet?

We have finally had a breakthrough with dgs.I remembered my strategy with ds 37 years ago.We told him all the poos went off to the seaside,mummy poo,daddy poo and his poo-everybody's poos went to the seaside and were waiting for his to come too.It worked!!Poos on potty for 3 days now.Must make sure to use word beach not seaside next time we take dgs !!!

Well we had a dry nappy this morning! Not sure if it's a fluke or not. She got a little prize for having a dry nappy and was very happy. We'll see how she goes today.

Dysgu, DD can't get on or off by herself, she needs help with her step.

ds1 ha mastered pee but refuses o poo in tne loo.

have tried eberything but he refuses.

mostdays he poos in his night nappy in the morning but some mornings he hasn't and we spend all day on poo alert waiting for the hysterics and the mess of pooey pants.

even more disheartening is the fact that he has pooed in th toilet but refuses to do it again as it's 'scary'

I have this problem too. Wee's are pretty good, he pretty much goes by himself but poos are such hard-work. will almost always poo in his pants even after having sat him down on the toilet for half an hour when he clearly needs to go but wont.

How is everyone doing?

I think the tat bag is starting to work as we've had all poos on the potty for the last couple of days!

Hit and miss here - we've had a couple of successes but a few more dirty pants . He's getting used to the idea though.
