Potty training stress

Hi
I’m looking for some advice. We started to try and potty train our DD she is 31 months she’s been doing it for 5 days but doesn’t seem to pick it up.

She knows what potty/toilet is for and what you do on it but when she has her pants on (won’t walk or move naked) on the first couple of days one time she got the potty herself and sat on it and went for a wee through her pants and has sat on it a couple of times once she started to wee but yesterday seemed to go backwards and just did a wee on three occasions without making any effort to go to the potty. This morning I went to put her pants on and she had a meltdown want her nappy on.

I just wanted some advice and wondered if it’s bad to take a wee break from it for a few weeks/months. She’s fine with her communication skills it’s just the practical side of it

Try not to get stressed by it if you can as she’ll pick up on it and get worried. Firstly I promise you it will all work out in good time, some kids just need longer than others to work it out. How many adults do you come across who are still not toilet trained? In terms of when she gets it right, I find stickers, praise and maybe a little impromptu dance together work well. If it doesn’t work, don’t make a big deal of it, just clean her up and say next time let’s take our pants off first / next time let’s do it on the potty. In terms of taking a break, I’m not sure you need to do anything concrete. Maybe have a day or two off it if she really gets upset about it, but then try again, again using lots of positivity. Personally I found no pressure but consistency worked well for mine. Does she go to nursery at all? I found seeing her little friends go to the toilet helped make it less scary and just part of the routine.

Five days is still really early, so I wouldn’t worry too much about the setbacks. If she’s getting upset about wearing pants, I’d probably take the pressure off for a while and try again when she seems more ready. You could also try potty-training underwear as a middle step between nappies and normal pants. SuperBottoms has padded underwear for potty training that you could look at, but I’d keep it relaxed and see what she’s comfortable with.
