My 3 year old boy starts nursery soon still not potty trained

Hi i tried in 6 weeks holidays hes not interested, i put under wear and then pull ups on top to prevent accidents.

don’t worry about it for now, get him settled at nursery and then try again. Nursery staff won’t thank you for trying to train whilst trying to settle in. They should be more than happy to help once he’s settled.

Thanks he turned 3 in july, i dont know wether they will help with toilet training. At the moment i been taking him every 30 mins. I dont know if the school nursery will help with toilet training.

My DS was 3 in July too. He started preschool in Jan. I’ve been stressing as his teacher was rather pushy around Easter time despite me saying he wasn’t ready, encouraged to send him to school in pants and it was just a disaster. Bags of wet clothes home every day.

Whilst he’s been better over the summer it is in no way reliable. In the hot weather he was pretty much naked on the bottom half whenever he was home and took himself to potty every time but it’s just not clicking when he is wearing pants.

Dont stress. Just let him get settled and it will come eventually. I’m hoping between me and the school over the next few weeks mine improves.

he doesnt show no interest he tell me when hes pooped in his pants hes not bothered if hes wet him self. Its stressing me out as i dont depend on others

We’ve been told our nursery are happy to support with potty training. My two year old trained a few weeks ago but I’m expecting a few set backs until she settles in. She starts on Monday.

I think as a PP said I’d wait now and try again when he’s happy and settled at nursery.

I would do the pants without the pull ups.

My pal is going through the same thing but he has to be potty trained to get nursery place but not sure if that is unusual

If he doesn’t have additional needs, school staff won’t assist with toileting, nor will they change nappies. They will expect you to do it.

He doesn't care because pull ups are designed to be comfortable if you wee or poo in them, so it's not really affecting him. Look at Eric site for more advice. Take his pull ups off, and get him to help clean himself up. It will be a monumental pain, but at the moment it's easier for him to pee in his pull ups and carry on playing, than it is to go to the potty.

DS hated getting wet socks. That did the trick.

Also chocolate buttons every time they do a wee in the potty helps.

He doesn't need to be interested, you just need to teach him. Might be better to wait til October half term now and then you'll have maybe 10 days to fully potty train.

For now, keep him in pull ups and keep taking him to use the potty - when he wakes up, when he washes his hands before meals, before bath time, before bed etc. Just regularly throughout the day.

Then when you're home for half term, get rid of the pull ups. First day you could just have him naked from the waist down, keep the potty close by and get him on it any time he starts to wee. Give him loads to drink so he gets lots of practice.

Day two get him in pants and just stay really consistent. Lots of praise and rewards when he uses the potty, don't get cross about accidents but just be clear that wee/poo goes in the potty now. Once you've started don't give up, no pull ups in the day, no pull ups over pants. You might have to stay home all week and just focus on it.

don’t worry but like PP have said, be consistent. My DS was quite late to fully train - we started trying at 2 and a bit but was approaching 4 before I was fully confident there was a low chance of an accident, it was really stressful.

Has anyone tried the nappy training pants they basically like underwear to prevent accidents

If you want him to actually train you need to accept there will be accidents. He needs to have properly inconvenient wet all down his legs, soggy socks, puddle on the floor accidents and learn what that feels like and the faff involved in cleaning that up. And he needs to learn what it feels like to need the toilet so he can recognise that need and go. If you’re taking him every 30 minutes he won’t have ever felt it. Pull ups over undies or reusable training pants are something you should only use when he really can’t have an accident because you couldn’t clean it up- long road trip or long haul flight for example. Keep him in the kitchen and garden (where you don’t have carpet) as much as possible but have a pet urine cleaner to hand in case he does have an accident on the carpet.

As for school nursery does he start tomorrow? It might be worth calling them today but you might have to send him in pull ups and start potty training properly either next time you have 3-4 days clear if he’s part time or October half term if he’s full time.

He is not bothered because he is not experiencing what accidents are like. He has no reason to be toilet trained
