Potty training regression after I was in hospital

My DS is 2y4m. We started potty training at Easter, we were a bit late as nursery said he was ready in November but we were going on holiday and then he was moving out of the baby room at nursery, then he and I were ill for about 2 months! In that time he went from telling us every time to hiding it a bit so I was a bit concerned we missed the window.
Week 1 was great, very engaged most wee in the potty and the odd poo, week 2 similar (we got a reward chart to try to improve success rate). Week 3 I was really ill and in hospital, he went downhill quickly and DH put a nappy back on 😬 for a few days.
We have now reached the stage where he is refusing the potty and not telling us. We are having a lot of accidents at home (still none at nursery except poos). We got some super toys and these did work for poos for about 2 days, but he seems to have lost interest in the toys.
He is totally dry overnight, but we still put a nappy on for nap/nighttime. I’m wondering about going completely nappy free and just dealing with the consequences. Does anyone have any tips for a toddler who has regressed and now refusing the potty? He goes rigid so you can’t get him to sit on it and he screams and hits.

Normally, I’d say persevere.

But I’m not surprised your child has regressed. In his mind, you left him (obviously you had no choice… but he’s too young to understand). You are probably still very much convalescent.

Give yourself a break, and wait for some nice weather.

Thanks I’m a lot better, I’m off work this week but hoping to do a phased return from Monday.
Would going back to nappies not confuse him further? He is fully dry at nursery still and happy to use the mini toilets there, he is dry over night and only does 3-4 wees a day, so he’s really ready. He always tells us before he does the wee, just this past week he has refused to sit on the potty and wets himself. Poos are still hit and miss (even at nursery) but they are always after
breakfast and about 4pm. I could try to get him to sit on the potty at these times but we have always waited for us to tell us he needs to go rather than taking him on a schedule.
Do you think I should speak to nursery? From their POV it’s going well.
