She's going backwards

DD showed absolutely no interest in the potty but we pressed ahead when she was 3 and 3 months. She took ages to cotton on and never really got it. She got a bit better over the summer, then went backwards a bit when she started nursery in September, coming home with at least one pair of wet knickers every day. She then seemed to get it and it got better but over the end of the year and the Christmas holiday, it's gone absolutely back to square one. We had five pairs of wet trousers in an afternoon this weekend.

I take her to the toilet but she's so resistant and screams that she doesn't need a wee-except she's already done one or she'll have one five minutes later in the knickers. She's been a lot better with poos but I feel she's starting to hold them, the nursery phoned me today to say she'd had two accidents and her little bum is red raw because she didn't tell them.

Im worried she's picking up on our frustration and I just don't know what to do. There's so much judgement for kids starting school in nappies but I'm terrified we're heading that way! Please help.

Solidarity - 9m in. She’s dry when she’s with us but has accidents at nursery mixed with some dry days there too, due to start school in September.

advice we have been given:

Make it inconvenient for them being wet, ‘oh dear we will have to stop playing and go upstairs and clean up’ etc. Our girl has favourite outfits and we will say ‘oh no we can’t wear this any more now it’s dirty so mommy will have to choose something else’ etc.

I got a really good rainbow timer that I’ll set and say ‘when the alarm goes off in half an hour it’s toilet time’ and she will usually take herself now when it goes off.

Our friends 5 year old will only wee out of routine (pre meals and pre bed, pre long journey etc) as wouldn’t think to take himself. Might be worth trying a routine like that?

Thank you, I'm so glad it's not just us! I feel like a really shit parent but don't know what we can be doing better. I will definitely try those suggestions x

It’s just the pitts, worst part of parenting by far. Especially when people say about being ready, and you’re like, well they aren’t clearly but they need to prepare for school! Also bringing the energy, even if you need to set up a few ‘success’ so she can feel good about herself with all the positive praise. Good luck 😮‍💨
