Potty training - is this normal?

DS is 2.5 and we’ve been potty training for about 2 weeks now.

At home he’ll usually only go on the potty if I bribe him with chocolate or let him look at TV on my phone (I know, not ideal long-term 🙈). He’s not really telling me when he needs to go yet, but we aren’t having many accidents.

At nursery it’s a different story, they just ask him if he wants to go, sometimes he says no, sometimes he’ll go, but no bribes are needed there. Again, minimal accidents.

He can also go for long stretches without a wee (a few hours at a time).

Does this sound normal at this stage? Should he be going to the potty without any bribes by now, and should I be worried that he isn’t telling us when he needs to go?

For context, we started when he kept pulling at his nappies and saying “wee wee/poo poo/wet” etc in a upset way. so it did feel like the right time & nursery also agrees he is doing very well.

It sounds like your son is doing well. Children often don't 'ask' to go, and the website eric.org.uk (bowel and bladder advice charity) says don't wait until they start asking. A lot of children this age are shy or don't realise they need to ask and it's a big transition. The Eric website says for future bladder and bowel health children should be potty trained by 30 months and it's great your nursery are being supportive and on same page as you.

I'd suggest using a star chart rather than food or screen bribes.
