Toilet regression?

My little boy has been potty trained for a while now but would always use the potty and was a bit afraid of the toilet. I got a toilet seat, same style and colour as his potty and he liked it, he went straight to it and used it fine even when we went camping, that was about a month ago. He also said he wanted to throw his potty away so we did! Now he's just turned 3, everything has changed! He's moved up to preschool at nursery so I understand there's been a change there but he's holding onto his wee there and at home and leaking a lot before going to the toilet. When I try to go back to basics of taking him regularly, he gets really frustrated. Im confused what to do. I don't want to force and hassle him so much that he hates the toilet but I don't know what the alternative is. I've tried a sticker chart and treats which seemed to work for a couple of days but he now just asks for a treat every time he sits on the toilet (i don't give in until he hits the agreed number of stickers) I'm trying to not get frustrated but there's been a couple of times I have lost my patience. Do I just go with it and see this as a phase and not worry or should I be doing something more for him?
