Wants to wee but struggling

We’re 6 days in and in many ways it’s going well - he’s not had loads of accidents and most have been when he’s distracted. He’s really happy to pop to the loo, regularly saying he needs a wee or a
poo, taking himself off when required. However…

He hasn’t done a wee or a poo in the toilet since coming home from Nursery on Friday. He’s still in nappies at night and he’s pooed in those nappies and in terms of wees he’s done them in the bath (I think one in the nappy but actually he’s not really waiting for the nappy) and a few accidents too. He can clearly hold it in for aaaaaages. But during those times he’s regularly saying he needs to wee and going but very quickly saying “the wee wee’s not coming”. He had only one accident today but oh my goodness was that a bloody torrent and he’d been to the loo to try within the previous 20 minutes. Same for last night’s bath-wee. He has been much more successful at nursery, funnily, having days he’s managed 3 or 4 times and a couple of accident free-days there last week.

On the poo front he doesn’t seem constipated although withholding a bit as he’s usually a twice a day boy and it’s been once in 24-36 hours - one toilet-poo so far only (and I think it was mainly urgency that time rather than a conscious poop) and the rest in night nappies.

We’ve not been pressurising him, commending him on taking himself to the loo and how well he’s doing etc, trying to encourage him to stay a little longer as it can take a little while for the wee to come, offering rewards if he does manage, singing songs and stories etc but any advice? Is it just time and keeping on carrying on?

Try telling him that sometimes the wee wee hides and we just have to sit for a minute for it to want to come out. Sounds like he's got a bit of stage fright, you could also try saying you're going to wait in the other room and then he can show you the big wee when he's finished. Keep going, he's doing so well!

I am on day 7 with my little girl and she is on a rollercoaster even within the same day of making progress/feeling fearful and withholding it. We are going with the push through and be kind and patient - she’ll get there in the end and it’s just my job to support and love through it (telling myself as much as possible!!)
