2 year old trained like a dream but night nappy causing tantrums

Our 2 year old potty trained over the weekend. It went a lot more smoothly than anticipated and is doing well no / one accident at nursery/ full days out. She is in pants in the day and seems very happy with them. At home we have being doing naps in pants. At nursery they are putting on a pull up over her pants.

The problem is at night. She goes for a pee before and after her bath and then we put on her night nappy (we use reusable nappies so it’s the same night nappies she has always used). She is having a meltdown every night I put her in it. Then stalling going to sleep saying she needs to pee etc. She seems really distressed at the thought of peeing the nappy now, but it’s making bed time take an age. She wakes up and wants the nappy off and goes for a pee immediately. Her nappies are damp, not soaked.

We are calling the nappies night time pants but she isn’t falling for it. Has anyone got any experience or suggestions?

Why don't you just try taking off the nappies at night too?

I'd get a couple of pairs of different 'night time pants'. If they're only damp, you'd probably get away with some of those training pants rather than full-on nappies.

Disposable bed pads instead of the nappy?

JellyAnd · 05/06/2025 15:35

If they’re just damp, not wet through then you can probably get away without if you watch what she drinks before bed and wake her up 5 minutes early with the potty. Maybe reusable training pants just in case.

I would recommend special bedtime pull-ups that don't look like the nappies she's always used.

As soon as both of mine potty trained they were dry at night as well. I would put them on the potty when they were half asleep when I was in my way to bed ( did that for about a week). I think we only had one bed wetting incident. If she doesn't want it, try her without.

I had a fitted sheet, incontinence pads and another fitted sheet on top for a couple of weeks but they weren't really needed.

At 2 DS was potty trained and refused night nappy. I told him ok but he couldn’t wet the bed and he never did.

I know you prefer reusables but why not try an eco disposable pull-up?

She’s clearly wanting to be grown up.

Also put a potty in the room or leave a light on so she can get to the bathroom easily.
