My DS has been dry at night for a few weeks now, even though he takes a bottle of water to bed, but when we encourage him to use the potty during the day, he mostly isn't keen and doesn't seem to realise when he needs to go to the toilet to be able to tell us in advance. Is this common? Thanks

That's great that he's dry at night.
Have you taken nappies away during the day?
If not, give it a try. After a while wetting himself, it will start to click.

Are you actively potty training and what method are you using? Realising when he needs the toilet and telling you is the end of the process i.e. a child that does that would be considered fully potty trained. If you haven’t done proper potty training yet then stands to reason he won’t know to recognise those feeling yet. The training is the process you go through to get to that goal and whatever method you decide on it’s usually no more nappies, a week at home concentrating on it and being prepared to clean up accidents. Nighttime dryness is hormonal and mostly unrelated- kids that are dry in the day at 18 months might still wet at night until age 5 and that’s considered perfectly normal.
