Speech/understanding delayed almost 3 year old taking nappy off to pee

I hope someone out there can help, my others were an absolute breeze to potty train and I'm at my wits end.

My almost 3 DS has a speech delay due to persistent glue ear which also affects his level of understandings he gets things like "need help", "I'm hungry" "I'm tired" and asks for individual things like items of food.

He has started taking his nappy off when he needs to pee (and even worse every time he poos) and does his business wherever he is stood. Ive tried showing him through books, shows on tv, physical demonstrations (his potty is a little toilet). We have been sitting him on the potty at every nappy change for a while.

The issue is that we can't tell him something like "here is your potty, it's for peeing in" and he would just get it. He doesn't know what doing a pee or poo is no matter how many times we say "oh you've done a pee". It's at least twice a day every day if not more.

I'm sick of clearing up mess all the time it feels like!

But by the sounds of it he does know he's about to go if he's taking his nappy off? Is he just getting the objective a bit muddled? How long has he been doing this?
