Just looking for tips from fellow Mumsnetters please. My 3.5 yr old has been potty training for 9 months. He is able to poo in the toilet and no concerns there. He is also able to wee in the toilet, and sometimes says he needs a wee and will go unprompted, sometimes goes when we prompt him, but other times will say he doesn't need a wee when we prompt him but then has a wee accident. Sometimes he does 6 or 7 little wees in the space of about half an hour, so 5 or so might make it to the toilet and 1 or 2 might be accidents. He has anywhere between 3-7 wee accidents a day. What's going on here? Any tips please!

What does he drink? Lots of little wees in a short space of time doesn’t sound usual, it sounds either like he isn’t fully emptying his bladder or like his bladder is irritated. Does he drink anything that could be irritating his bladder such as fruit juice or squash? Have you had him checked for a UTI? When he goes to the toilet is he sat for long enough to empty his bladder and without distractions such as TV/ iPad?

I would ensure he is only drinking water or milk, ensure that when he goes he is not watching anything and concentrating on fully emptying his bladder and have him checked for a UTI. If the problem still persists it sounds like you need to work on his bladder capacity by ensuring he is drinking plenty of water across the day and trying to extend how long he can go between wees, at his age I’d expect him to be able to go go at least a couple of hours between wees. The ERIC website will have good advice on this.

If he does 6 or 7 wees in half an hour then that is a sign that he isn't ready to fully do it. I can't understand how it's taken 9 months for you to realise it isn't working though. This happens to lots of children, my oldest was the same. He just didn't have to right control on needing to go.

Obviously since it's been 9 months you might not want to go back to nappies which is fine so you have to use the patience and washing machine method. Which also works. But you can't get cross with him it isn't his fault he can't do it. He will just click with it at some point.

Apart from reminding him I don't think there is much you can do?

3 Yr old had water infection in the middle of potty training. It's totally put him off . He holds himself and I'm really scared he will get another infection. Its really hard , he screams when I try to encourage him to use the potty . Help !!!
