Toddler nappy poos at bedtime

Help so nearly 3 year old toddler been potty training for about 4 months he’s recently been dry during the day with odd accident which is amazing and super proud of him!

however night time he is wet overnight in nappies which isn’t an issue as he drinks milk before bed so know we could maybe eliminate this drink but this isn’t the issue. The issue is when we leave him in the room for bedtime he goes to bed but then ends doing a poo in his nappy but instead of telling us he takes it off puts it in the bed and then puts on his trousers without anything on but then we have to go upstairs and wipe him although usually quite neat and put another nappy on.

Ive tried to keep an eye on monitor and run up when I see him standing but he’s too quick. I’ve tried also waiting up with him on toilet until he does poo but takes a long time so end up giving up then soon as I leave him in room he’s done it in nappy.

How do I master this next step? Any ideas please?

Hey

Well done on getting this far with potty training!

I'd advise leaving him on te toilet and going out.
Kids like privacy and that's probably why he's doing a poo when he knows you've left/he's alone..

I know my son used to go to the other room from around 1 years of age to do a poo.

Try and see if you leave the toilet rather than waiting on him.

Thank you so much for coming back and good advice. I should have thought of this as I know when I have managed to get a poo it’s been me sitting on top of stairs so will try this tomorrow evening. Fingers crossed!

Really well thank you so much! It’s so much better! Tonight he was super quick we seem to gotten in a routine which is amazing we do a book or two and then toilet then another book then bed. Just hoping it continues but the leaving him on there with no toys or books and me in other room really helps 😊
we’ve had a couple of accidents but it is so much better!

Yes even at that young age they like privacy and can relax/let the poo out when in private... glad the help from the other poster worked, fingers crossed he keeps it up :)

'I'd advise leaving him on the toilet and going out.'

Is it just me who read this and imagined you going "Just popping to the pub, darling - we'll be back about 11 to tuck you in!"
