Nearly 3 yo refusing the potty

Firstly, apologies as I feel like I’m dominating this topic a bit but potty training is proving an absolute nightmare and I’m worried that I’m going to put DS back years by messing it up.

He is 3 in mid December. Nursery have toilets which he will sit on but has only had a wee a couple of times. I tentatively started to try to train him a couple of days ago - got a potty that looks like a toilet.

The first evening he sat on it for ages but no wee or poo. The next evening he had a wee. I made an absolutely massive fuss, gave him chocolates, rang grandparents. I didn’t quite put on a firework display but you get the idea. Next morning, managed another wee. I thought, great. I knew it would be a slow process as he isn’t very verbal so won’t say when he needs a wee or poo but thought we’d get there.

Now he’s refusing to sit on it, won’t wear big boy pants and just generally isn’t engaged with it at all.

As far as I can see I’ve no option but to leave it for a while. But do I just put the potty away and try again in six months, or leave it out and try to encourage but leave if he says no?

Just leave it out and ignore it. If he's not ready, he's not ready. If he's starting to use the loo at nursery then just let them carry on with that and try again in a few months.

Thanks - that’s probably best. I know there’s a big range at this age but I’m so conscious all the other children I know his age have been toilet trained for a while. Just feels like I’ve done something really wrong!
