Is he ready?

DS is 2.10 and I am considering potty training him, but he isn’t really showing the signs I have read about.

He is capable of weeing on the potty when he wants to (like as a game). When I tell him, very casually, that potties are for wees and poos he tells me he doesn’t want to poo on it. He never has dry nappies (well, only one). Has only once told me he’s done a wee. He never acknowledges when he’s done a poo but he runs about like crazy, doing naughty things like banging the tv, and I feel like he’s trying to attract my attention on some level. His verbal skills are excellent, and he will tell me if he’s got a snot, or needs a drink, etc.

Is he ready? Is it better to wait until he tells me he wants to use the potty? Will this day every really come? Is the fact he can control his wees to some extent an indication that we should just go for it. I’m scared of doing it too early but don’t want to miss the window. Thank you!

Following as my son is the same age and I could have written this post myself, he is exactly the same!

Hi there - I guess it is a tough one to call as no-one has replied! I wanted to update you in case it helps.

A couple of days after posting, my DS did a poo on the potty before his bath (I was astounded) and the next day refused nappies and only wanted proper pants. So now we are potty training! He is good with wees but only poos in pants so far. However, I was so pleased because he told me ‘I’ve done a poo in my pants’ whereas he’d never ever told me he’d done one in his nappy! So that’s progress in my book. It’s day 4 now and he’s announced ‘poo coming out’. The next step will be to get it in the potty of course but it’s a start.

So maybe your DC will be the same and only recognise the poo once he’s moved to pants? Maybe he genuinely doesn’t know he’s done it in his nappy. To be honest I’ve been wondering if my DS has ever realised it actually comes out of his bottom, rather than miraculously appearing in his nappy. All good thoughts in hindsight! The clincher was asking for pants though. I was unsure if he was ready but I could hardly tell him no, you have to keep wear nappies!
