We started toilet training with DS at Christmas, when he was 3y4mo. For comparison, his big sister was ready and done in a couple of days at 2y4mo.
DS didn't seem fully ready but as we were home anyway, we gave it a try. All looking good for the first few days. A mix of us prompting and him going by himself. Poos were a definite issue for a while, we always had to watch for signs and he would rarely go himself.
Nursery wasn't great, but definitely making progress. January was mostly okay , then he had various illnesses in February, including chickenpox. He was so poorly that he could barely lift his head so we popped some nappy pants back on. I thought it would be awful going back to pants, but it was okay.
March got a bit better and we had a run of 10 days where he had no accidents at all. Then another virus and its been awful for the last 3 weeks.
Lots of accidents and he will not tell us when he needs to go or when he's had an accident. In fact, he often denies it when we can see that he is wet. Lots of accidents when we've spotted the signs that he needs to go and can't persuade him to.
We stay calm and clean him up. Don't make a fuss or show any negative emotion. He gets tokens in a jar when he goes by himself or tells us that he needs to. He doesn't seem to care either way!
No other development concerns at all, he's doing great other than this.
Is this relatively normal for some children? It doesn't feel like there's any light at the end of the tunnel just now.
I'll give my HV a call but she's mostly very unhelpful.
