Potty training!

Me and DH work full time and really want to potty train our 2.5 year old. We gave the Oh Crap method a go back in December but found the temperature and the general routine quite gruelling.

We don't have a lot of time all together but were thinking of trying again over the long Easter weekend. I'm so reluctant because I'd love to spend this time unwinding a bit and enjoying our time as a family.

I wondered if anyone had tips for more gradual methods?

Hi all, mind if I join? We've just done day 3 trying to train my dd 2y 9m and am feeling so deflated...she's only having success when we spend time with her sitting on the potty whilst we read to her/watch tv but she's not actually taking herself there yet when she feels she needs the potty. I don't think she's recognising the feeling yet. She will tell me when it's already trickling down her leg. Any tips for getting her to know beforehand or does it mean she's just still not ready? This is our third attempt and I'm feeling so deflated and not sure whether to continue tomorrow but we've spent the whole of Easter weekend so far so I'm reluctant to give up. Particularly as she seems old amongst her friends to still be in nappies.

Following!

Wanting to start soon and hopefully do both boys together, eldest is a few months of 3 and youngest is 18 months. Youngest probs too soon but hoping he'll copy his big bro.

Not 100% convinced eldest is ready as he never tells me if he's done a pooh, the youngest does.

Going to buy a couple of potties for now for them to get used to it.

Any tips welcome.

Not sure how to progress from naked to trousers 🤷🏻‍♀️ He's great when naked but we've had a tiny dribble in his trousers today and the full on accident yesterday 🤦🏻‍♀️

Setfiretotherain1 · 10/04/2023 11:13

@TheBirdintheCave Have you gone very baggy trousers so he doesn’t feel like he’s wearing them much?

We’ve just had an accident but she was out in the garden so I’m putting it down to being distracted… though she is in pants today so may need to stop that if it happens again.

I've found that DS will take himself off to the potty when naked but doesn't have the same instinct when wearing trousers so it's a bit like going back to Day 1 and pulling his trousers down and popping him on the potty frequently.

TheBirdintheCave · 10/04/2023 12:40

@Setfiretotherain1 All of his trousers are very baggy now that he's not in nappies 😂

It really does feel like he's back to square one. I only have until Sunday for him to 100% get it or he has to go back into nappies 😢 His childminder won't take him unless he's dry.

That sounds great! Any success on the potty is a success, small steps! 😊 Taking themselves to the potty is a step later down the line, I found. Don't wait for her or expect her to tell you yet, keep taking her and offering her to the sit on the potty, asking frequently. Eventually she'll recognise for herself when it's time to go to the potty and then be able to verbalise that too. It doesn't mean she's not ready yet in my (limited) experience, just means that she's not quite at that step yet.

There's a lot to learn! Learning to be without a nappy. Learning what that feels like. Learning to sit on the potty. Learning to use the potty. Learning what that means! Learning to stop what you're doing to go to the potty. Learning to hold it until you're at the potty. Learning to use the potty when you're not at home. Learning to recognise you need the potty. Learning to say you need the potty. Learning to pull trousers down and up. Learning to wash your hands. Learning to take yourself to the potty. Learning to know when to ask for help on the potty. Learning to wear underwear as well as trousers. Learning to wipe! And then remembering it all as well.

Preserve, sounds like she's doing great so far 😊

Teapleasemilknosugar · 10/04/2023 12:59

*persevere, not preserve 😆

Your childminder doesn't sound very supportive at all!

Sunday is a long way yet! But your childminder sounds unrealistic and not very helpful…

I'm having a similar freak out about nursery but I keep reminding myself that we've made a huge amount of progress in just a couple of days so another 6 days is a long time really.

TheBirdintheCave · 10/04/2023 13:45

@Teapleasemilknosugar @Setfiretotherain1 She's fabulous in every other way but has a bee in her bonnet about potty training for some reason 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's making me far more anxious about this than I should be.

TheBirdintheCave · 11/04/2023 10:36

We're giving up. It's just got worse and worse as the days have gone by and now he's just dribbling over the carpet.

Back into nappies for us! Next run of long days we'll have is Christmas so he'll be three when we next try 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sorry to hear that, maybe your childminder will have a change of heart and you can start sooner 🙂

TheBirdintheCave · 11/04/2023 17:40

Bit of a turn around this afternoon as he successfully asked to use the potty twice on our walk 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe not out of the game just yet?

mynameiscalypso · 11/04/2023 17:49

I'd say that definitely counts as a success @TheBirdintheCave!

We had a trouser poo today. Lovely. I'm trying to remind myself that it's important he has accidents as it's all part of learning but still 🤢

Setfiretotherain1 · 11/04/2023 20:30

@TheBirdintheCave that sounds promising! Might be worth persevering?

A slightly gross question for you all… when you’ve been wiping them after a poo have you been standing them up or how are you doing it? I’m worried I’m not getting her as clean as when she was lying down for a nappy change. And are you using wipes or toilet roll?

"Bend over and touch your toes!" then wiping with toilet roll.

Mine is still in nappies at night so I make sure I give a good wet wipe before putting night nappy on (if it's not a bath night).

Teapleasemilknosugar · 11/04/2023 21:35

@TheBirdintheCave persevere!

TheBirdintheCave · 11/04/2023 21:52

@Setfiretotherain1 I get him to bend over 😂 We use cloth wipes which are like little flannels so have kept on using those.

I will persevere for now and see where he's at on Sunday 🤞🏻

I always made sure DS had a bath every night. In between I used wet wipes.

SaltedButty · 12/04/2023 09:51

We started on Easter Monday. He was introduced to the potty months ago but we weren't consistent (we too work full time). We have had to take his trousers and pants off and have him half naked. He was quite angry with the potty yesterday (probably because I feel like I am constantly asking him if he needs to go) so have resorted to bribes.

He did 2 wees all day, Monday he did a pee and a poo in potty.

I am not convinced he has much awareness of when he needs to go. He usually goes when I have coaxed him into sitting on the potty and he just happens to be on there when he goes lol

SaltedButty · 12/04/2023 09:52

Nursery have told me to bring him in in pants tomorrow which I am dreading. I really dont think he will even make it to nursery dry!

TheBirdintheCave · 19/04/2023 10:39

How is everyone getting on? We stuck with it in the end :) He had a full dry day on Sunday so we sent him to his childminder in pants. We're three days dry now :D
