Hoping someone can help

We started potty training DS1 in September just before he turned 3 in October. The problem is he doesn't ever ask to go to the toilet, he will happily go if we take him or have an accident. The other problem we have is even if he has gone before getting into the car he almost always has an accident in his car seat. We're often having to use pull-ups on long car journeys otherwise his car seat will get ruined and he'll be sat wet for a while.

At home does he have access to the potty/toilet and know he can take himself? What method of potty training did you use?

Truthfully he's quite reluctant to take himself as he doesn't want to stop playing but has easy access to the toilet. We did no pants for the first couple of days, then transitioned to underpants

Does he/has he ever taken himself or does he only go when you tell him it?

Sounds like he's not ready. I'd make everyone's life easier and try again in a few months. Potty training will be quick and easy once a child is physically and mentally ready. You can't do anything about being physically ready, and can't control the mental aspect either.
