Transition from potty to toilet

How did people go about encouraging their child to transition from the potty to the toilet? DS is 29 months and started training at Easter, he is using the potty very confidently now but shows no interest in using the big toilet. We got him one of those toilet seat inserts but when I ask him if he would like to try it he just says no. He sometimes likes to sit on the toilet with the lid down and tells me he's doing a wee, but refuses to sit on it with the lid open.

I would like him to get some practice using the toilet as that will give us a bit more flexibility when out and about - at the moment we're having to carry his travel potty everywhere because that's the only place he'll go.

Oh why are they so tricky! I never really gave this particular issue much thought and just ordered the toilet seat one day and sat her on it. But I’m thinking that she already knew her nursery peers do this at nursery and she had seen one of her slightly older friends do this at home. Because they are all a bit older she looks up to them! Not sure if your DS has any peers around from whom he might see this and make him want to try?

He does go to nursery and they have the mini toilets which other children are using, but he still prefers to use the potty there as well. He does know some older children, but not in situations where he would see them using the toilet.

I wonder if he feels scared of falling in, which I can quite understand. My next thought would be reassurance and rewards.
