Potty wees OK, poop not so much

Hi all 😁

We’ve been potty training our 3-and-3-months-old for a couple of months now. He is OK at going for a wee on the potty when he is in trousers or no bottom half on, but still not quite there with pants.

Main issue is he won’t poop on the potty. At the start, he did and even took himself a few times, but he now refuses. He does ask for a nappy whenever he needs to poop, so he does have control, but we are keen to get him on the potty.

I don’t think it’s a privacy thing as he is comfortable pooping in the nappy in front of us. We tried not giving him a nappy for a bit, but this just caused him to become constipated, so we don’t want to go down that route again.

But any advice or guidance would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you 😁

DS is 3.5 and has been potty trained for just over 6 months. He is fine with wee but never poops in the potty. Only his pants.

So no help but you are not on your own.

My DC is now much older, but also used to ask for a nappy, although fine doing wees on the potty. It was solved when we moved to the toilet with a trainer seat though, I’m not sure what the issue was with the potty!

There's some advice here www.eric.org.uk/pdf-children-who-will-only-poo-in-a-nappy

Would he do his poo in a nappy while sitting on the toilet, progressing to doing it in a nappy with a hole cut out so it goes in the toilet?

I didn’t use a potty at all with DD2. Nursery only had toilets so for consistency (and cos pottys gross me out) we got a step and a seat for the toilet. Could be worth trying.

Thanks for advice all! We have tried sitting him on the potty with a nappy on, but he’s not having it. We’ve even tried ticking him by putting the nappy in the potty, but he clocked that straight away ha!

We might try switching to the toilet training seat as we haven’t been down that route yet.
