Day 4 and losing the will to live!

So we are on day 4 of potty training, he knows when he needs to go and is saying he needs to have a wee but isn't using the potty. He is sitting down on it for literally 2 seconds then gets up and wees somewhere else, trying with all the praise but not working, he won't sit down for any time on the potty at all, tried books etc and it's just down and up straight away. At a loss and feel I'm banging my head against a brick wall with it really, any advice would be much appreciated

It seems like although he has some idea of the sensation to use the toilet he hasn't fully understood it. So leave it out nappy back on and wait a few months?

I'm a bit confused. So he sits down for 2 seconds, gets up and wanders off to wee elsewhere? Surely the trick here then is to put him on the potty, in bathroom, with you there, and keep encouraging him. If he's getting up and then wee'ing 20 minutes later, that's different.

Does he prefer wee'ing standing up? DS never really took to the potty and very quickly was just using the toilet on a stool. Poos were in the potty for a bit but then on toilet, albeit with me/DH there to support him.

How old is he? I am convinced that sometimes a child just isn't ready. DD knew perfectly well when she needed a wee etc, but nonetheless, refused to do it. At almost 3 (I thought I'd go crazy waiting until then) it took her 2 days to master it. DS was younger but similar - he had been able to hold it etc for MONTHS before he was ready for the potty and took just a few days to nail it when he was.

I'm definitely not an expert as only potty trained one child so far but she was similar as you ds. I decided to stop and try again a few months later. So glad I did, we started again when she was 3 years 2 months (which I know is late by a lot of people's standards) but she was fully dry within a week. I think I was starting before she was ready the first time

We are encouraging him loads to sit on it when he sits down but won't sit down for more than a second. He knows he wants to go as he is saying he needs to go and dancing about a lot but isn't sitting on the potty long enough to do anything on it so ends up just weeing on the floor. Not sure if just to stop and try again later on, he is 2 and a half

Snap - day 4 of potty training a 2.5 year old boy.
No advice as it is going terribly here, just know you aren't alone!!

Bribery? Chocolate button if he does a wee in the potty , lots of big boy praise etc?
Or give it up and do it again in the spring when the weather is warmer

eurochick · 16/02/2021 18:42

Leave it. He's not ready. You are just going to cause both of you a lot of upset. Try again in a few weeks.

preggersteach · 16/02/2021 20:30

We've decided to give it up for the time being! Thanks for all the advice though
