Will not ask for the toilet

My little boy is 2 year 8 months, the potty was not for him so we just started on the toilet instead which is absolutely fine.

He will wee when we sit him on the toilet but will not ask to go to the toilet. We keep him topped up with water and keep taking him to the toilet to get him used to it. Has anyone had an experience like this and is it just a matter of time before he starts to ask for the toilet himself? or should he be asking by now?

Thank you for any help

No advice for you sorry, I'm in the exact same situation though DS is 2yrs 9 months and will tell us when he needs a poo but will not for just a pee.. he goes when we set him on but just doesn't ask to go. We're hoping (lockdown allowing) he can start preschool soon but they'd like him to be toilet trained. We have very few accidents at home because he goes when we set him on but if we don't he won't ask and will then wet himself 😩

Ahh hopefully it clicks for them and it’s just a matter of time before they get there. My little boy is the same and rarely has accidents at home but I am not sure how he would manage if we were out and back to normal life with not telling me when he needs the toilet

Hi yes it's totally normal for them not to ask in the beginning. How long since you started?
It takes quite a few weeks in my experience (childminder & nanny). Just keep taking him, a good tip is not to ask (answer is always no) but get to know roughly how long he can hold it on normal daily drinks and then take him (normally every 2-3 hours, after meals etc) - just say 'time to go to the toilet' casually, and go together. I find to helpful to remember that you are only teaching them where to put the wee the Poo, which they can learn just like anything else. Good luck!

No he’s unlikely to ask for a while yet. You just have to go before setting out anywhere and build lavatory trips into your routine.

Take off his clothes! Including diaper. Winter is not the best time to potty train Grin

Thank you so much, that makes me feel much better and that we are on the right track. We only started a week ago so early days. Everything you say makes sense and some great tips thanks

@Laura17111 DD1 asked to put the diaper on when she wanted to go wee Grin I had tried training pants and wtv but having something in between her legs meant toilet to her. It went really quickly after that realisation Wink
