Struggling with 4 year old

DS is 4, starts reception in September. Has a 2-3 year delay and has recently been issued an EHCP. School have agreed to take him on the proviso there is a formal review in June and if he isn't more independent (ie toilet trained) his placement will need to be reviewed.

I'm trying everything. I sort of figure that if he is consistently 2 years behind in all areas of need then developmentally that means it will happen between now and turning 5 but the pressure is on.

We have significant attempts every preschool holidays, made use of the march-june lockdown. I'm frustrated!

Any tips?

Pretty sure that they cannot refuse to take him.

In fact, state schools cannot refuse to take children simply because they are not toilet trained.

If he's not ready, he's not ready! Speak to the Local Authority SEND team to check out the legality of what school is saying.

That's absolute bollocks!

They must have a disabled toilet and if he's funded for 1:1 support, then there's your person!

There is two disabled toilets in the school, one of which in the foundation building

Are you desperate for your dd to go to this school?

Even though the are talking complete bollocks and you absolutely could fight it if you want to, I would have a think about whether this is a school which is going to have your child's best interests at heart. Are they going to be truly welcoming, and support him to achieve his full potential?
