Potty training with limited speech

Hiya

My son will be 2.5 in Jan. His speech is very limited but it is slowly coming on. I know the next time the HV visits he'll be referred to speech therapy. I am happy that it's just a speech delay. He's no other signs of autism, or special needs etc and can communicate very well in his own way. However I am wondering how this is going to go with potty training. Have any of you potty trained a child with limited speech that can't say they need to go to the toilet? I don't know how to start to be honest. Thanks in advance Smile

DS is the same, I've used the oh crap method and it's working really well. Only issue is him letting us know when we are out of home but at home he basicslly just takes himself off and goes to the loo. Started at 31 months (32 now)

Neither of my children could speak when I potty trained (speech sound disorders). I taught them the Makaton sign for toilet but tbh their non-verbal communication was more than adequate. Is your child able to communicate hunger and thirst? Also, 'wee' and 'poo' are very easy words to learn or approximate, DS is 3.9 and they are two of his only clear words.
