2yr2mo old terrified when peeing w/o nappy

Hi, I know there are a billion posts about potty training but struggling to find exactly this question.

We are trying a method involving our 2yr2mo-old walking around with no nappy so he gets used to the feeling of peeing without a nappy and we slowly direct him to sit on a potty.

I'm not at all concerned by all the wiping up the floor and getting peed on (a lot in just 36 hours), but am concerned and unsure what to do about him seeming terrified when peeing without a nappy. We are encouraging him gently to let us sit him on potty every time but NOT forcing him to do anything, just not letting him cuddle up to us WHILE peeing since I think that closeness is mimicking the close/cloth feeling of the nappy. We are hugging him close and trying to comfort him (but with him facing out) and potentially both of us holding him even but he is still so scared, just when he's actually peeing. Doesn't like it going down his legs etc and think just the feeling scares him.

Any ideas/tips? Think he will get over the fear if we stick with it a couple more days? Also wondering whether we should give him trousers and see how he reacts to that feeling of getting wet without a nappy - maybe less frightening?

😟

If he’s terrified I would stop, wait until he’s older and has a better understanding.

Sounds like he's far too young to try potty train.

I agree with the others. He’s not ready. I would just pop him back in a nappy and try again later in the year, if you think he’s more ready.

Christ. Put a nappy on the poor child.

has anyone had experience with their child being really scared and upset about the experience of peeing without a nappy? How long did you wait before starting potty training again and were they less scared the next time? Any tips for helping LO overcome fear?

He's too young, read the gentle potty training book.

Fear may be because he doesn’t understand.

Or try in the garden (if you have one) where he is super distracted and playing and can just do it wherever

Or wait until he’s old enough to understand.

Thanks all - we bailed! Not comfortable with quite that level of fear (if he was a bit whimpery I might have given him a chance to get more used to it but seemed too much) - will try again when he's a bit older. Anyone else had children with fear just of the experience of peeing without wearing a nappy? And whether after a few days (perhaps at an older age) they did get used to it?

Not of a fear of seeing without a nappy but a fear of the plop noise a poo would make in the loo... we stopped trying the poos and then Tried again with loo roll down the loo to stop the noise now he’s fine!

It’s weird/strange what they do and don’t like !

Good luck!
