Why has my 3.5yo son started pooing in his pants?

I am at the end of my tether and feel like I cannot deal with this any longer.

My son was basically potty-trained. Then lockdown happened, staying in temporary accommodation, change of routines, absence of normal childcare assistance. Then he got a serious campylobacter infection and was in hospital with bad diarrhoea etc. Now he routinely poos in his pants and often wees. Sometimes I have had to change his bottoms three times a day.

I know I shouldn’t be but I’m finding it really hard not to get annoyed. Even when we ask him whether he needs to go, he just goes in his pants ten minutes afterwards. Help me. Basically feel like I’ve failed as a parent. His older brother is autistic and I wonder if this is ASD coming out a different way.

Maybe go back to nappies/pull ups and start from the start again? I think it’s more likely an issue with the illness having reset him than an ASD issue.
