Potty refusal

My son is 27 months and he absolutely refuses to go on the potty. We first tried it a few months ago and it was going well until he did his first poo. It was, quite honestly, the biggest poo I’ve ever seen and he was traumatised by the size of it! I was holding his hands and he was crying as if he was in labour while trying to get it all out. Since then he will not go on the potty and seems perfectly happy to go in his nappy. Nursery says he’ll do it when he’s ready but I feel like he could go on like this forever! I don’t want to keep changing nappies until age 3 and beyond, not least because they’re really expensive where I live.

Is there m anybody else in a similar situation and what are you doing about it?

Have you tried the toilet instead? You can get steps and a seat for him to use so he doesn’t feel like he will fall down it. He may associate it different to the potty, so be more willing to try it?

Never bothered with a potty went straight to toilet. Got them used to the environment and easier to teach them about flushing toilet/ washing hands etc. Also found it handy for consistency when visiting grandparents didn’t have to worry about making sure their was potties and avoided them using pull ups/nappies.

One of my friends potty trained her toddler with potty and then it took a while for them to adjust to using a toilet, it was like starting from scratch.

I do agree though that they just do it when they’re ready, but maybe with the experience he had that it’s put him off more.

Forget the potty and go straight to the toilet. Use a toddler seat adapter and a set of steps. Worked a treat with my DS as he felt much more secure than he did on a potty.

We do have a potty thing for the toilet but unfortunately he’s scared of that too!
